ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Wofford women's soccer team conceded a last-minute goal to Navy in a tough battle Thursday night at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Maryland. The Terriers move to 0-3-0 for the season.
First Half:
The Terriers didn't hesitate to set the pace for the Midshipmen to start the first half. Forward
Kate Markey was quick to turn Wofford's throw-in into the first shot on goal for the Terriers.
Markey's shot turned into the Terriers' first corner kick of the match, but the Midshipmen's strong defense held their backline tight, forcing the Terriers' offense out of the box.
The Midshipmen didn't see their first shot until the 23rd minute when Navy's Emily Clay shot bottom center right at
Elizabeth Navola to obtain the save.
The Terriers' momentum never stopped throughout with all three shots made in the half being on goal compared to the Midshipmen having six attempts with only two on goal.
The last several minutes of the half,
Ines Obradovac went for the strike but was quickly saved by Navy's Natasha Stramrood. The Midshipmen made the last strike on goal to end the half.
Second Half:
The Midshipmen came back from the break and dominated the second half.
The Terriers saw minimal possession with Navy's offense taking charge, but the Terriers continued to keep fighting.
The Midshipmen were ready to close the match when awarded a penalty kick at the 80th minute. Navy's Marlee Heaven launched the ball into the bottom right corner, but Navola, quick on her feet, dove to deflect it for the save.
Hopes of the Terriers getting their first draw of the season quickly dropped when the Midshipmen scored with just one minute remaining.
Notes:
Despite the tough loss, Navola had seven saves bringing her to a career total of 99 saves.
McKinley High saw her first start of the season with 37 minutes played.
Julia Grier continued to make her mark in her freshman season with a shot on goal, as well as playing her first full 90 minutes.
Another breakthrough freshman
Emma Valdes saw her first career game start in tonight's match. Valdes played for 63 minutes, a season high.
The Terriers are back at Synder Field on Sunday, August 24 at 2 p.m. as they host the Richmond Spiders.
