Volleyball Concludes Georgia Tech Classic Against Ole Miss

ATLANTA – Despite a six-ace performance from Maddy Frazier, the Wofford volleyball team could not overcome Ole Miss Sunday at the O'Keefe Gym, falling in three sets (21-25, 14-25, 17-25) to the Rebels. The Terriers conclude their stint in the Georgia Tech Classic at 0-3, and Ole Miss is 2-1 to begin the campaign.

The Rebels used a strong offense in the match, hitting .202 with 37 kills to Wofford's 14. The Rebels held an advantage in digs as well, 53-40. The Terriers were strong on the service line, matching Ole Miss with eight aces, and Wofford posted seven blocks to finish just shy of the Rebels' 10.

Bradley Brown led the way offensively for Wofford with four kills. Annemarie Rakoski and Chloe Smith each had three behind her. Maddy Frazier recorded eight assists as Taylor Pecht dished five.

Frazier thrived at the service line, sending home a career-best six aces. It's the most by a Terrier since Caroline Przystup's six against SC State last season. With the performance, Frazier joins Przystup in a tie for the fourth-highest ace total in a three-set match in program history. Pecht and Ella Coleman each had one ace.

Defensively, Laney Klika led the way with 13 digs. Coleman added seven behind her. Pecht notched five to reach 500 digs for her career. Rakoski led the way at the net with four denials. Brown recorded a pair of blocks, the first of which was the 100th of her career.

Ole Miss opened the contest with three points in a row, but after a service error Annemarie Rakoski recorded a block. The Rebels pulled ahead to a 9-3 advantage, but a block provided a needed sideout for Wofford, who went on a groove with Maddy Frazier at the service line. She orchestrated an eight-point swing thanks in large part to her sending home four aces. Chloe Smith and Bradley Brown each added a kill in the run, which saw the Terriers take an 11-9 lead. The set saw a back-and-forth battle ensue in the middle goings with Wofford ahead 14-13 before a five-point run for the Rebels flipped the margin to 18-14 in their favor. The Terriers stayed on their heels, as Frazier's fifth ace of the set brought Wofford within 21-18. A Brown kill made the score 22-19, but Ole Miss stayed just a step ahead to edge out a 25-21 set one win.

After the Rebels claimed the first two points of set two, Bradley Brown put home a kill, and Ella Coleman followed with an ace. However, Ole Miss posted a five-point run thereafter. The Terriers pulled within 11-6 after a kill from Chloe Smith. Not long after, a four point Wofford run pulled the Terriers within 14-10, highlighted by kills from Annemarie Rakoski and Natalie Arnold. The Rebels would respond with the next four points, and despite an Arnold kill, Ole Miss carried its momentum the rest of the way to claim the set 25-14.

The third stanza saw the Rebels claim the opening eight points before Emily Normand's kill broke the run. It sparked the Terriers, who saw Chloe Smith notch a kill and Annemarie Rakoski post a block as Wofford went on a 7-1 run. Taylor Pecht added an ace, and more blocks were provided by Rakoski, Bradley Brown, and Smith as the Terriers pulled within 9-7. In the middle goings of the set, Charlotte Bell and Natalie Arnold teamed for a block, and Maddy Frazier's sixth ace of the afternoon helped the Terriers claw back within 16-12. The margin proved just too wide to overcome, however, as the Rebels settled in to keep Wofford at arm's length en route to a 25-17 set three victory.

Wofford travels to Knoxville, Tennessee, this week for a pair of matches in the Tennessee Invitational. First, the Terriers match up against the host Lady Vols on Thursday, September 4, at 6:30 p.m. The following morning, the Terriers battle fellow Palmetto State foe Winthrop.
