Women’s Soccer Delivers Late-Match Equalizer for a 1-1 Draw

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team drew 1-1 against Georgia State at Snyder Field on Thursday evening after a late-match goal by Annie Andrews secured the tie for the Terriers. Wofford has now delivered five-straight positive results, the last three being ties.

The Terriers delivered a physical, all-pressure offense in the first half. Despite the Panthers striking first, Wofford continued to keep defensive pressure, not allowing Georgia State a single corner kick.

Forward Saachi Bureau led the offensive pressure this half being the first Terrier to strike at 10:02, but her shot was saved by the Panthers. Bureau struck the ball again at 22:42, but barely wide right of the goal.

Midfielder Julia Grier answered back on a Terrier corner kick with shot on goal but was quickly saved by the Panthers.

At the end of the half, the Terriers had the momentum going in their favor when Bureau struck one more time at the goal but just missed high.

Bureau ended the half with three shots, two being on goal. Grier had two shots and one on goal, while Ansley Elizalde had one shot. Nine out of the starting 11 players played for all 45 minutes.

Wofford had six shots compared to the Georgia State's eight. However, both teams each had two shots on goal. Elizabeth Navola and Georgia State ended the half with two saves each.

The Terriers came back from the break with momentum. However, the Panthers' offense fought back with a shot attempt saved by Navola in the 58th minute. With Georgia State's offense being persistent, they scored off a throw in to capture a 1-0 lead at 60:49.

Despite this, the Terriers didn't hesitate to fight back when Ines Obradovac struck at the lower corner to equalize the match but was saved by the Panthers.

On a Wofford throw-in, Grier took possession of the ball and found Annie Andrews right in the box. At the 74th minute, Andrews struck the ball deep in the lower right corner of the net to equalize the match for the Terriers.

The second half ended with a last-minute effort by Georgia State, but the Terriers held their defense strong to close the game with their third-straight draw.

Wofford ended with nine shots, five on goal compared to Georgia State's 16 shots, seven on goal. Navola ended with six saves compared to the Panthers' four. Both teams ended with three corner kicks each.

Notes:

Sophomore defender Carson DeMars made her first career start in tonight's match. DeMars also played for a full 90 minutes, a season high.

Andrews scored her first career goal with an assist from Grier to equalize the match for the Terriers.

Grier has had either an assist or a goal in four out of the past five games played.

Navola has only allowed one goal per game so far this season.

The Terriers close off non-conference play in the Sunshine State on Sunday, September 14 at 1 p.m. against Stetson University, streaming on ESPN +.
