DELAND, Fla. – The Wofford women's soccer team finished its non-conference slate on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win against Stetson University. The Terriers scored early back-to-back goals in the second half by
Ines Obradovac and
Julia Grier to deliver their third win of the season.
The Terriers started off the first half slow with finding their footing with possession. However, Wofford quickly turned it around when
Ansley Elizalde struck first with a shot right of goal at 8:16.
The game became physical in this half with several free kicks taking place before
Ines Obradovac took a shot at 14:56 that was blocked by the Hatters' defense.
The Terriers' back line held firm in the first half, holding the Hatters' offense to one shot on goal and two shot blocks.
Saachi Bureau led the team's offense at half with two shots, both being on goal. Meanwhile, Obradovac, Elizalde and
Julia Grier each had one shot.
Each of the Terriers' defenders played for all 45 minutes in the half. Wofford ended the half with three shots on goal compared to Stetson's one. Each team had two corner kicks and six fouls. Navola had one save compared to Stetson's three.
"We had to make adjustments going into the second half," head coach
Kevin Dempsey said. "We had to create our own environments, our own energy."
Coming off from a slow half, the Terriers made sure to ramp up the energy. After a shot attempt by Stetson's Avery Wise, Navola took the goal kick for the Terriers, which landed right at the feet of Obradovac. She scored at 47:09 to put Wofford on the board first with a first-career assist by Navola.
The Terriers didn't stop their momentum. With several throw-in attempts by Stetson that fell short, Wofford's offense took advantage with
Delaney Minor capturing the ball to pass it forward to Grier. Just over two minutes shy of the last goal, Grier struck the ball deep in the top right corner of the net to bring the Terriers 2-0 at 49:21.
For the rest of the second half, the Terriers' defense held it tight to not allow the Hatters to score. Despite several more shot attempts by
Sidney Kitts,
Kate Markey and Minor that didn't quite follow through, the Terriers came out of the non-conference slate with the 2-0 win.
"It was a mature performance from the team," Dempsey said. "We bent a few times, but did not break, we just kept fighting. We can see them growing and their confidence growing. Now wrapping up non-conference, there were some tough losses at the beginning, and coming back now, it says a lot about the character of the group."
The Terriers finished the match with 10 shots, five on goal compared to the Hatters 10 shots, three on goal. Wofford ended with three corner kicks, while Stetson had four.
