SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team (3-6-4, 0-2-1) fell to the Samford Bulldogs (5-2-4, 2-0-1) 4-1 at Snyder Field on Friday night.
Wofford opened the first half with strong defense against Samford's tough offensive pressure. The Terriers were fending off any opportunity the Bulldogs had in the box. The Wofford defense couldn't hold for long when Samford's Samantha De Luca received a pass from Caroline Smith in the 6
th minute to find an opening in the Terriers' back line to give them a 1-0 lead.
Wofford didn't stop fighting as they created intense pressure on the Bulldogs' offense to block two shots in a row in the box. These gave the Terriers an advantage to bring the ball forward to find opportunities to get their first goal of the night. In the 27
th minute with a pass from
Saachi Bureau to
Ellie Gower to a quick pass to
Ansley Elizalde in the box, Elizalde found an opening in the bottom right corner of the net to tie the match 1-1.
The Wofford offense quickly rallied to bring more pressure in the front to find more opportunities like the last. However, the Samford defense held the Terriers to the one shot this half. The Bulldogs' offense in the 36
th minute found an opportunity from Caroline Smith to Ava Baumann to bring Samford a 2-1 advantage.
The first half ended with Wofford having one shot compared to Samford's six. The Terriers had zero corner kicks, while the Bulldogs had two. Goalkeeper
Elizabeth Navola and Samford's Peyton Hull both did not have a save.
The Terriers came back from the halftime break with physical offense in hopes of securing an equalizer to start off the half. However, Samford quickly held possession which created an opportunity in the 53
rd minute for the Bulldogs' Sarah Holland to strike deep in the net unassisted to extend Samford's lead to 3-1.
Wofford continued to create pressure on the Bulldogs' offense. The Terriers saw chances to put goals on the board from
Kaliegh Gonzales and
Charlotte Simas, but each were saved by the Bulldogs.
In the last five minutes of the half, Samford off a corner kick drilled a goal deep in the left corner to secure their 4-1 win.
The Terriers ended the match with three shots, two on goal, compared to the Bulldogs' 14 shots, with eight on goal. Navola ended the game with four saves compared to Samford's one.

Ansley Elizalde recorded her first goal of the season. She now has one assist, one goal and three points so far this season.
Ellie Gower recorded her third assist and
Saachi Bureau recorded her second assist in tonight's match.
The Terriers saw their first and only corner of the night in the 71
st minute of the match.
