Gabby Mundy Drills Game Winning Shot as Women’s Basketball Defeats UNCG 61-59

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With the game tied at 59 points apiece, freshman Gabby Mundy drilled the game winning shot with three seconds left to give Wofford a 61-59 win against UNCG on Saturday afternoon inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. Wofford has now won four of its last five games.

"A gutsy performance by our team," said head coach Jimmy Garrity. "We had some highs and some lows, but I am really proud of the way our team hung in there. Gabby was outstanding – especially down the stretch. That is a really good team that we just beat. The way we took care of the ball was really important."

The Terriers improve to 9-9 with a 3-1 mark in conference play, while UNCG falls to 12-7 and 2-2 in SoCon action. Gabby Mundy totaled 22 points, including her second game winner in the last seven days. The freshman scored the go-ahead basket against ETSU last Saturday.

"This one was a nailbiter," said freshman Gabby Mundy. "We let them come back after the third quarter, but we stuck together as a team and played good defense down the stretch. That led to our offense."

Wofford finished the game shooting 25-of-61 (41%) from the field and knocked down five threes. UNCG shot 21-of-53 (39.6%) from the field and made six triples. The Terriers were 6-of-8 from the free throw line, while UNCG was 11-of-14. The Spartans won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Wofford 35-34. The teams were even at 12 offensive rebounds each. Wofford gained the edge in the paint, outscoring UNCG 28-18. Both teams tallied 12 assists, but the Terriers only committed 10 turnovers while UNCG had 13.

Freshman Gabby Mundy led the charge on the offensive end, totaling 22 points along with the game winning shot. Mundy also added six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Maddie Heiss followed behind with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Queen Ikhiuwu had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. Courtney Swider added seven rebounds off the bench. Ikhiuwu and Swider rejected one shot apiece.

UNCG scored the first basket of the game, but Gabby Mundy answered with a quick bucket on the other end. Wofford would lead 4-2 after Maddie Heiss put home a layup on the next possession. The Terriers fell into a scoring drought after that, not scoring a field goal for almost seven minutes of gametime. Gabby Mundy and Courtney Swider combined for three free throws during the Wofford skid, as UNCG would lead 12-7 with 1:33 left in the quarter. Mundy drained back-to-back three-pointers to end the drought, giving Wofford a 13-12 lead at the close of the first stanza. Mundy totaled 10 points in the quarter.

Neither team scored a field goal until the 6:43 mark of the second quarter. UNCG used three free throws to regain the lead, 15-13, early in the frame, however. The first basket of the quarter came from the Spartans, as UNCG took a 17-13 advantage. With the Spartans holding a 19-17 lead, Wofford kept UNCG off the board for the remainder of the half and took a 21-19 lead heading into the break. The Terriers held UNCG to just 28 percent shooting and forced 11 turnovers in the first half.

Maddie Heiss nailed a triple on the first possession of the second half, giving Wofford a 24-19 lead early on. An 8-2 run from UNCG put the Spartans ahead by one, but Wofford rolled off eight-straight points to take its largest lead of the game, 34-27. A pair of three-pointers from UNCG got the team within one point. No points were scored by either team for the next three minutes, until Gabby Mundy tallied a layup with a little over two minutes left in the quarter. Despite UNCG scoring four-straight to take a one-point lead, Courtney Swider sunk a midrange jump shot to give Wofford a 38-37 advantage at the end of the quarter.

The two teams traded scores at the start of the fourth, with UNCG eventually taking a 44-42 lead. A 10-1 Wofford run allowed the Terriers to jump back in front, as the team took a 54-47 advantage with 5:04 left in the contest. UNCG did not give up, going on its own 8-2 run to get the game back within one point. Maddie Heiss converted an and-one to give Wofford a four-point lead, 59-55, with just over two minutes of action left in the game. UNCG rattled in a pair of free throws along with tough jumper to tie the game at 59-all with one minute remaining. The Terriers turned the ball over on the next possession but were able to string together a stop on the defensive end. Freshman Gabby Mundy beat her defender on the final Wofford possession to score the game winning basket with three seconds on the clock, giving Wofford a 61-59 win over UNCG.

The Terriers will be on the road next week, travelling to Samford on Thursday, January 22, for a 7:00 p.m. ET tip-off. Wofford will then face Mercer on Saturday before returning home. All games can be streamed live on ESPN+.
