SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After standout performances against Samford and Mercer, Wofford men's basketball sophomore guard
Kahmare Holmes has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week as the league office announced the award on Monday.
Holmes lifted the Terriers to a pair of wins to put Wofford in second place in the Southern Conference. Midweek against Samford, Holmes achieved a new career-high of 36 points. Wofford scored 50 points in the second half, 29 coming from Holmes. His proficiency in driving to the basket shone through, as only six of his points came from behind the arc.
On Saturday, he reached his sixth consecutive game with over 20 points and his fourth time scoring over 25 points this season. In a close battle for second place, Wofford was able to edge their way past Mercer with a second-half push. Holmes scored 27 points, only getting to the line four times. He was an all-around force, pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out seven assists.
For the season, the Charlotte, North Carolina, native has started 20 games, scoring double digits in all but two games. He is averaging 19.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while picking up 52 assists and 43 steals. The guard is shooting .487 percent from the field and .330 percent from three. He also leads the team with the most points from the line with 96 made free throws.
Holmes is the third Terrier to win SoCon Player of the Week this season. He becomes the 36th Terrier to receive the honor since joining the Southern Conference in 1997. This is the first time three different Terriers were named SoCon player of the week in a season.
The Terriers (14-7, 5-2) return to action on the road at Chattanooga on Thursday, January 29, at 6 p.m. before returning home to host ETSU on Saturday, January 31, at 2 p.m.
