Women’s Basketball Loses Heartbreaker 65-64 to Furman

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 65-64 loss to Furman on Friday night inside of Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Terriers led by one-point with two seconds left in the game, but Furman made a game winning shot to win. Wofford falls to 11-10 with a 5-2 mark in conference play. Furman improves to 14-8 with a 6-1 record in SoCon action.
 
Wofford finished the game shooting 22-of-59 (37.3%) from the field and made eight threes on 19 attempts. Furman shot 25-of-61 (41%) and knocked down four triples. The Paladins outrebounded Wofford 41-34, including 14 offensive rebounds. Furman totaled 36 points in the paint compared to just 20 by Wofford. The Terriers won the turnover battle, committing 10 while Furman had 13.
 
Gabby Mundy led the team with 19 points and seven rebounds. Queen Ikhiuwu followed behind with 14 points, while Molly Masingale had 13 points to go along with eight boards. Elli Porter rounded out the four double-digit scorers with 10 points. Maddie Heiss posted a team-best three assists. Gabby Mundy swiped two steals. Masingale and Ikhiuwu swatted two shots each.
 
Furman grabbed the first four points of the game, sparking an early 8-2 run by the Paladins. Molly Masingale got Wofford on the board in the early skid. The sophomore guard followed that up with a three-pointer, shortening the deficit to three points, 8-5. Furman answered with a bucket, but Masingale nailed another triple to get Wofford within two points. The Terriers got a stop on the next possession, and Queen Ikhiuwu was able find a layup to tie it at 10-all. The teams would trade baskets over the next three minutes, ending the quarter knotted up 14 each.
 
The Paladins scored the first basket of the second quarter, but Gabby Mundy was able to tie the game again at 16 points. After both teams scored on the next possession, Wofford scored seven unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game, 25-18. During the run, Wofford kept Furman without a field goal for over four minutes of gametime. The Terriers controlled a seven-point lead until Furman scored four-straight points to end the half. Wofford would end the second quarter leading 33-30.
 
Queen Ikhiuwu put Wofford on the board first in the second half, giving the team a 35-30 lead. Furman knocked down a three-pointer in return, but Ikhiuwu once again had her way in the lane. Despite the Paladins cutting the deficit to two points again, Gabby Mundy nailed a three-pointer to get the lead back out to five. Another three by Mundy a few possessions later lifted the team to a seven-point advantage. After a made free throw by Furman, Molly Masingale nailed third triple to cap off an 8-1 Wofford run as the Terriers led 50-41 with 3:20 left in the quarter. Seven unanswered points by the Paladins cut the Wofford lead to two points, 50-48, at the end of the stanza.
 
Wofford opened the fourth quarter with five-straight points to get the lead back to 55-48 with 7:54 left in the contest. Furman was held scoreless for the first 4:47 of gametime during the run. Back-to-back buckets from the Paladins got the game to three points, however. One of Elli Porter's two three-pointers in the fourth quarter gave Wofford some breathing room, as the team led 58-52. Following a made free throw from Furman, Maddie Heiss put home a layup to give Wofford another seven-point lead with under four minutes to play. Eight unanswered points from the Paladins gave Furman its first lead since early in the second quarter, 61-60. Gabby Mund responded with a layup to hand the Terriers the lead again, 62-61. After a couple of stops on the defensive end, Mundy made the back end on a pair of free throws to stretch Wofford's lead to 63-61 with 33 seconds left. Furman was able to tie the game on the next possession. On the following offensive trip for Wofford, Mia Flor grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the putback. Flor made the second free throw to put Wofford up 64-63 with 1.9 seconds left. Furman was able to make the game winning shot, as Wofford lost 65-64.
 
The Terriers will continue their three-game homestand with a visit from ETSU on Thursday, February 5. Chattanooga will follow on Saturday, February 7, as part one of a Wofford double-header. All games can be streamed live on ESPN+.
