Women’s Basketball Falls to ETSU 61-57

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell in a 61-57 decision to ETSU on Thursday night inside of Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Terriers cut the Bucs lead to two points with just over a minute to play but could not complete the comeback.
 
Wofford ended the game shooting 19-of-53 (35.8%) from the field and made nine three-pointers at a 39.1 percent clip. ETSU shot 26-of-60 (43.3%) from the field and knocked down just three triples on 15 attempts. The Terriers shot 10-of-12 (83.3%) from the free throw line. ETSU outrebounded Wofford 42-27, including 13 offensive boards. The Bucs totaled 46 points in the paint compared to just 18 by Wofford. The Terriers won the turnover battle, committing nine turnovers while ETSU had 10.
 
Gabby Mundy led the team with 18 points including four three-pointers on seven attempts. Queen Ikhiuwu followed behind with eight points. Sophia Rueppell chipped in eight points off the bench – all of which were in the second quarter. Maddie Heiss paced the team with six rebounds and five assists. Rueppell led the team with two steals.
 
Queen Ikhiuwu started the game with four-straight points to put Wofford up early on. ETSU responded with four points of its own to tie the game, but five consecutive points from Molly Masingale kept the Terriers in front. With Wofford up 12-9 late in the first quarter, the Terriers would score seven unanswered points to take a 19-9 lead. ETSU scored a last-second basket, however, as Wofford led 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Elli Porter scored the first basket of the second quarter, pushing the Wofford lead to 10 points, 21-11. Neither team scored over the next three minutes of action, until ETSU found six unanswered points to cut the deficit to four points with under five minutes left in the first half. Back-to-back three-pointers from Sophia Rueppell kept Wofford ahead. The teams traded baskets at the end of the quarter, but Mia Flor was able to sink a triple on Wofford's last possession. The Terriers would take a 34-26 advantage into the half. Rueppell totaled eight points in the second quarter on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting.
 
ETSU tallied 10 unanswered points to start the third quarter, taking a 36-34 lead with 5:08 left in the stanza. Gabby Mundy ended the five-minute Wofford drought with a triple from the top of the key as Wofford regained the lead, 37-36. A 7-0 run by the Bucs in response put the team ahead by six points. The Terriers were able to score five-straight to close the quarter, however, including a buzzer beater layup by Gabby Mundy. Wofford would head into the fourth quarter trailing 43-42.
 
The Bucs scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but it was Gabby Mundy nailing a step back three on the next possession to tie the game at 45-all. After trading baskets over the next several minutes, ETSU would go on a 9-0 run to stretch the Buc advantage to seven points, 59-51, with 1:33 left in the game. Wofford would go over seven minutes of game time without a field goal. Gabby Mundy ended the dry spell with another three-pointer, making it a five-point game with a minute to play. Mundy converted one of two free throws shortly after. Wofford would ultimately fall short on the comeback, losing 61-57 to ETSU.
 
The Terriers will be back at home to wrap up a three-game homestand on Saturday, February 7, as the team will take on Chattanooga at 1:00 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team playing Western Carolina at 4:00 p.m.
