Women’s Basketball Takes Down SoCon Leader Chattanooga 67-63

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team defeated the Southern Conference leader Chattanooga 67-63 on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Mocs cut the Terrier led to two points with 39 seconds left in the game, but Gabby Mundy sealed the victory with a pair of free throws.
 
Wofford improves to 12-11 with a 6-3 mark in SoCon play. Chattanooga, who came into the day undefeated in conference action, falls to 16-6 and 8-1 in the SoCon. Gabby Mundy scored a career-high 32 points in the win. That is the most by a Terrier since Rachael Rose scored 38 in 2024.
 
"I can't tell you how proud I am of this group," said head coach Jimmy Garrity. "At Chattanooga we gave up 51 rebounds. We won the rebounding battle today 35-to-22, and I think that was the real difference. Our players never got too high or too low. I am really proud of the whole team."
 
Wofford finished the game shooting 19-of-45 (42.2%) from the field and knocked down five threes on 14 attempts. Chattanooga shot 25-of-54 (46.3%) and made just three triples on 13 attempts. The Terriers went a perfect 24-of-24 from the free throw line – the first time in program history the team has went 100 percent with 20 or more makes. Wofford dominated the glass, outrebounding Chattanooga 35-22 with 10 offensive rebounds. Chattanooga outscored Wofford 38-26 in the paint.
 
Gabby Mundy led the way with a career-high 32 points. Mundy went a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe. Maddie Heiss followed behind with 12 points, eight of which were free throws. Molly Masingale had a team-high six rebounds. Mundy paced the team with three assists and a career-best four steals. Toni Warren and Courtney Swider added a block apiece.
 
Chattanooga started the game with six unanswered points to lead Wofford early on. Maddie Heiss scored the first basket for the Terriers, while Gabby Mundy knocked in a pair of free throws to shorten the deficit to two points, 6-4. The Mocs scored on the next possession, but Mundy tallied five-straight points to give Wofford a one-point lead. Elli Porter followed that up with a triple as the team led 12-8. Despite Chattanooga regaining a 14-12 advantage later in the quarter, Wofford made four-straight free throws to take a 16-14 lead into the second quarter.
 
Two free throws from Gabby Mundy to start the second quarter followed by a Maddie Heiss layup put Wofford up 20-14. That was the start of a 9-2 run by the Terriers, as the team would go up 25-16 with 6:15 left in the half. Chattanooga got the game to five points a few minutes later, but four more points from Gabby Mundy got the Wofford advantage to nine. The teams would trade baskets over the final few minutes as the Terriers led 37-29 at the end of the first half. Gabby Mundy totaled 17 points in the half.
 
Molly Masingale nailed a three-pointer on the opening possession of the second half, lifting Wofford to a 40-29 lead. Five-straight points from the Mocs got the lead back to single digits. Chattanooga continued to chip away at the lead, getting within four points with under three minutes left in the stanza. Back-to-back three-point plays from Gabby Mundy got the lead to 10 points, but Chattanooga hit a three on its final possession. The Terriers held a 54-47 lead at the end of the quarter.
 
Chattanooga got on the board first in the final quarter, cutting the Wofford lead to five points, 54-49. That was part of eight unanswered points to start the quarter as Chattanooga took a 55-54 lead with under eight minutes left in the game. Despite not scoring a field goal for four minutes, Wofford used four free throws to take the lead back. The Terriers would hold a 59-57 advantage at the 3:35 mark. Chattanooga tied the game on the next possession, but a Queen Ikhiuwu layup followed by a pair of free throws from Maddie Heiss put Wofford up by four. Chattanooga got the game within two points with 39 seconds left, but Gabby Mundy sealed the game with two free throws to give Wofford a 67-63 win.
 
The Terriers will be on the road next week as the team will travel to UNC Greensboro on Thursday, February 12, for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff. Wofford will follow that up with a trip to Western Carolina on Saturday, February 14.
