GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to take down UNCG 51-38 on Thursday evening inside of Bodford Arena. The 38 points from UNCG is a season low.
Wofford improves to 13-11 with a 7-3 mark in conference play. UNCG falls to 13-12 with a 3-7 record in SoCon action. Head coach
Jimmy Garrity earned his 153
rd win at Wofford with the victory, making him the all-time wins leader in program history. Crystal Sharpe was the previous record holder at 152.
"Winning on the road is really hard," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "I thought our defensive effort was outstanding. Unbelievably proud of our rebound efforts. The team did what they needed to do to hold on to win down the stretch. I am really happy for our team."
The Terriers finished the game shooting 20-of-50 (40%) from the field and knocked down four three-pointers. UNCG shot 15-of-66 (22.7%) from the field and made just one three on 15 attempts. Wofford shot 7-of-9 (77.8%) from the charity stripe. The Terriers outrebounded UNCG 42-39, but the Spartans totaled 17 offensive rebounds while Wofford had eight. Wofford outscored UNCG 26-18 inside the paint.
Leading the way offensively was
Maddie Heiss, scoring 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting while knocking down three triples as well.
Gabby Mundy followed behind with 12 points, six rebounds, and a team-high six assists.
Queen Ikhiuwu led the rebounding efforts with 14 boards.
Toni Warren rejected a career-high three shots.
UNCG got on the board first, but it was
Gabby Mundy tying it up on the next possession for Wofford. The bucket from Mundy was the start of eight unanswered points, as the Terriers would take an 8-2 lead with under five minutes left in the quarter. Despite the Spartans cutting the deficit to one point, Wofford went on a 9-2 run to end the quarter. The Terriers would lead 17-9 going into the second frame.
The Spartans once again grabbed the first points of the second quarter, cutting the Wofford lead to 17-11. Five-straight points to answer gave Wofford its largest lead of the game, 22-11, with just under seven minutes left in the first half. UNCG could only get within seven points, as Wofford would take 29-19 lead at the end of the first half. The Terriers held UNCG to just 7-of-35 (20%) shooting from the field in the opening half.
Five consecutive points to start the second half lifted Wofford to a 15-point lead early on. UNCG responded with five points of its own, but the Terriers countered with a 39-23 advantage a few minutes later. The defense continued to perform at a high level, holding the Spartans to only eight points in the third quarter. Wofford would lead 43-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
A 7-0 run by Wofford to start the final frame allowed the team to extend its lead to 23 points, 50-27. UNCG scored its first basket of the stanza after going the first three minutes scoreless. That was the beginning of nine unanswered points from the Spartans, shortening the Wofford lead to 13. The Terriers were able to hold on, however, earning a 51-38 win against UNCG.
Wofford will stay on the road as the team will take on Western Carolina on Saturday, February 14, at 2:00 p.m. The Terriers will return home next week for their final two games at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium of the season.
