Maina Named to FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford's Brandon Maina was among the 57 student-athletes named to the 28th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team announced by the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA). Maina is also one of the twelve finalists for the 25th Annual FCS ADA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Maina, a fifth-year senior from Hiram, Georgia, started ten games on the defensive line with 57 tackles. He had 15 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. The eleven sacks rank fifth in school history in a single season. Among the national leaders, Maina is fourth in sacks (1.10 per game) and sixth in tackles for loss (1.50 per game). He also had a fumble recovery and two safeties. He also earned All-Southern Conference first team honors and was named to the FCS Football Central All-American second team. Maina is one of only four student-athletes from the Southern Conference to be honored.

Current FCS ADA President, Kurt McGuffin, director of athletics at University of Tennessee Martin, stated, "This year's honorees exemplify what it means to be complete student-athletes, excelling both in the classroom and in competition. It is always rewarding to recognize outstanding individuals who embody the values and standards of our division, and this year's selections are no exception. We extend our sincere congratulations to all nominees and especially to those receiving this well-deserved recognition."

Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) institutions are eligible for the award. Each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate or graduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. They must have reached their second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. They also must have participated in 50 percent of the games played at their designated position.

This year's Review Committee consisted of: Mark Benson, Albany; Bill Chaves, North Dakota; Sherryta Freeman, Lafayette; Kurt McGuffin, UT Martin (Chair); and Skip Perkins, North Carolina Central.
