CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The Wofford women's basketball fell into a scoring drought in the fourth quarter, leading to a 61-42 loss at Chattanooga on Thursday evening. The Terriers fall to 6-9, 0-1, while Chattanooga improves to 9-5, 1-0.
Wofford finished the game shooting 17-of-50 (34%) from the field and made four three-pointers on 15 attempts. Chattanooga shot 23-of-66 (34.8%) and knocked in seven triples. Both teams were perfect from the charity stripe.
Gabby Mundy impressed in her Southern Conference debut, leading the team with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Queen Ikhiuwu followed behind with 10 points.
Rebounding was an issue for Wofford, as Chattanooga outrebounded the Terriers 51-25, including 21 offensive rebounds. That resulted in 10 second chance points for the Mocs. The two teams were even in the paint, scoring 18 each. Wofford committed 17 turnovers while Chattanooga had 16. The Mocs converted those turnovers into 14 points compared to only four for the Terriers.
Chattanooga scored the first basket of the game, but freshman
Gabby Mundy nailed a three-pointer on the other end to give Wofford a 3-2 lead.
Queen Ikhiuwu followed that up with her first points of the evening. Mundy and Ikhiuwu led the charge, scoring the first nine points for the Terriers. With Wofford holding a 9-5 lead early on, the team would enter a dry spell. The Terriers went over five minutes without a field goal, as
Maddie Heiss ended the drought with a three-pointer. It was a 9-2 Chattanooga run to close the quarter, with Wofford trailing 14-11 at the end of the frame.
The Mocs scored on the first possession of the second quarter, furthering the Wofford skid to an 11-2 mark.
Queen Ikhiuwu finally got Wofford on the board at the 6:44 mark. Chattanooga responded with a bucket, but a triple from
Maddie Heiss paired with a couple of free throws by
Gabby Mundy tied the game at 18-all with one minute remaining in the half. Back-to-back threes in the closing minutes gave Chattanooga a 24-18 lead heading into the break. Prior to the two threes, Wofford had held Chattanooga to 2-of-15 shooting in the second quarter.
Toni Warren got the scoring started in the second half, knocking in a jumper for the first of nine points in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets until Warren sunk a three-pointer, shortening the deficit to three points, 28-25.
Toni Warren scored nine in a row for Wofford, keeping the game within six points. Chattanooga would eventually get the lead out to eight points, but a deep ball from
Maddie Heiss allowed Wofford to enter the final frame trailing 39-34.
The Mocs grabbed the first points of the fourth quarter, but
Gabby Mundy responded with her 11
th points of the night. A pair of free throws from
Queen Ikhiuwu got the Chattanooga lead down to five points with 7:41 left in the game. With Chattanooga leading 43-38, the Mocs would roll off 13 unanswered points to put the game out of reach for Wofford. The Chattanooga run would extend to a 20-4 advantage. The Terriers would go on to lose 61-42.
