Women’s Soccer Collects First Conference Win Against VMI

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford College women's soccer team defeated VMI, 3-0, after two commanding goals early in the first half at Snyder Field on Thursday night.

"The girls have been playing really hard and competing in all their games, and some things came together for us nicely tonight," said head coach Kevin Dempsey.

First Half
The first half began with the Terriers dominating possession. Wofford got their first goal of the game in the third minute, after a pass into the box by Maya Lake was tapped in by Annie Andrews. It was the fifth time that Lake and Andrews combined for a goal this season.

The second goal came in the 19th minute, after Betty Dovy drew a penalty on VMI's Bailey Reid in the box, giving the Terriers a penalty kick. Bailey Mullen took the penalty shot and slid it past Maren Ryberg.

"I might as well take the chance at least if I miss I can say that I tried," said Bailey Mullen when asked why she took the penalty kick. "When I walked up there I was just like, I've been waiting for this all year long, we haven't had a PK all year, it's my last game at home, I took a deep breath and just did it the way me and Nav (Elizabeth Navola) have been practicing."

VMI struggled to find possession or scoring opportunities, as they were outshot by the Terriers by an 8-2 margin, with both shots being saved by Chloe Cundiff.

Second Half
Feeling the success from the first half, the Terriers came out controlling possession, having five shots in the first 30 minutes of the second half.

With the consistent offensive pressure, Wofford found their third goal of the game in the 66th minute, with Julia Grier's third goal of the season.

The Terriers continued to hold up the backline, only allowing three shots from the Keydets in the half.

"Coming out with energy and then slowing the game down when we needed to and keeping possession was, keeping the ball under our control was really beneficial to us," said senior captain Delaney Minor when asked what contributed to the night's win.

With the clock counting down into the final minutes, Wofford did not let up the offensive pressure, with three shots in the final eight minutes of play. VMI was unable to make a comeback, ending the match with Wofford winning by a 3-0 margin.

Every Terrier win this season has been a shutout.
