SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford softball team went 2-0 in day one of the Wofford Invitational, defeating UNCW 5-1 and UMBC 9-1 in six innings. The Terriers improve to 6-1 on the year, marking the team's best start in program history.

GAME ONE
Abby Greenwood got the nod in game one, going a full seven inning en route to her third win of the year against UNC Wilmington. The junior pitcher only gave up one run and threw seven strikeouts.
Brianna Stanley led the team with two RBI to go along with one hit.
Kalli Petty and
Gracie Parker followed behind with one RBI apiece.

It took three innings for either team to get on the board, as UNCW tallied one run in the top half of the stanza. With Wofford trailing 1-0 at the bottom of the third, the Terriers scored four runs to take their first lead of the game.
Brianna Stanley doubled to left field to score
Rivers Sampson and
Lauren Archambault.
Gracie Parker followed that with an RBI single to put the team up 4-1. The final run of the game was scored by
Kaytlin Greenwood. Greenwood stole third base before reaching home off an error. Wofford would keep UNCW scoreless for the remainder of the game to win 5-1.

GAME TWO
Margaret Axelson pitched a full six innings against UMBC, only allowing one run on three hits. Axelson totaled eight punchouts – just one short of her career high of nine.
Lauren Archambault led the team with three RBI, along with two apiece from both
Rivers Sampson and
Gracie Parker.
Brianna Stanley and
Desirae Devine totaled one each. Wofford was walked a total of 12 times, including three from
Kalli Petty. Archambault, Sampson, and Devine were walked two times apiece.

Lauren Archambault got the scoring started in the second inning for Wofford, driving in
Gracie Parker from a walk. After taking a 1-0 lead heading into the third inning,
Brianna Stanley scored
Rivers Sampson off a single to right field. Wofford scored two more runs off of walked batters, with Sampson and Devine both earning an RBI. The Terriers led 4-0 at the end of the third. UMBC scored its only run of the game in the top of the fourth, but
Gracie Parker responded with a two RBI double to take a 6-1 lead bottom half of the frame. In the fifth inning,
Rivers Sampson tallied a double to score two more runs. The final run of the game was scored by
Desirae Devine with
Lauren Archambault recorded the RBI.

Wofford will take on UMBC again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. before a matchup with St. Bonaventure at 5:30 p.m. Both games can be streamed live on ESPN+
