Women’s Lacrosse Falls In Home Opener To Cincinnati

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the home opener, the Wofford College women's lacrosse team was defeated, 17-7, by the Cincinnati Bearcats on Friday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium.

Wofford (0-2) was led by Carlie Cutinella with three goals. McKenzie Moeller had two goals and two assists for four points. Kaitlyn Bellanca had a goal and an assist, while Ella Bartlett grabbed a goal of her own. Brooke Meltcher led the Terriers in draw controls with three. The Bearcats held the shot advantage, 34-21.

Wofford had 23 ground balls to Cincinnati's 27 as three Terriers had three ground balls each. Wofford caused eight turnovers to their seven as Olivia Graebner had four of her own. Hannah Taylor had 12 saves with a .414 save percentage.

Kaitlyn Bellanca opened the scoring for the Terriers within a minute from a free position shot. Cincinnati found its answer with eight minutes left in the first quarter. The Bearcats struck quickly with a second goal less than 30 seconds later. Cincinnati went on to score two more before the Terriers could grab one back by way of McKenzie Moeller with thirty seconds left in the quarter. The quarter ended with the Bearcats leading 4-2.

Moeller struck first in the second quarter, scoring just 36 seconds in. Cincinnati went on to score four unanswered before the Terriers could find another. Moeller got involved yet again, assisting on Wofford's fourth goal of the day from Carlie Cutinella. The teams went into the half with the Terriers trailing by an 8-4 margin.

The Bearcats found the first goal of the second half within one minute, but Wofford was able to grab one back shortly after with a free position goal from Cutinella. Cincinnati found the net three times before Ella Bartlett slotted one past the Bearcat goalkeeper with two minutes left in the quarter. The Terriers almost added another goal late in the quarter, but the Bearcats held them off. The teams headed into the final quarter with Wofford down, 12-6.

Cutinella kicked things off in the final quarter with a goal three minutes in. Her third goal of the day was assisted by Moeller. A free position save from Hannah Taylor kept the momentum in Wofford's hands, but they were unable to capitalize. The Bearcats found their first goal of the quarter with eight minutes left in the game. The floodgates opened up as Cincinnati went on to score four more goals before the end of the game, 17-7.

Wofford will host the Le Moyne Dolphins on Tuesday, February 17, at Gibbs Stadium at 3 p.m.
