Women’s Basketball Defeats Mercer 72-58 on Education Day

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team held Mercer to 34 percent shooting en route to a 72-58 victory at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Education Day. The Terriers welcomed 1,667 fans to campus, marking the fourth most at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in program history.

The Terriers improve to 15-11 with a 9-3 mark in conference play and have won four games in a row. Mercer falls to 15-11 and 5-6 in SoCon action. Wofford is currently second in the Southern Conference.

"I am really proud of our defensive effort," said head coach Jimmy Garrity. "We had to keep them out of the paint because they are such good drivers. I thought our transition defense was really good. I was also happy with the way we shared the ball on the offensive end. I feel great about this team coming down the stretch."

Wofford finished the day shooting 24-of-60 (40%) from the field and made four three-pointers. Mercer shot 18-of-53 (34%) and knocked down seven triples. The Terriers shot 20-of-23 (87%) from the charity stripe. Wofford forced 20 turnovers from Mercer, resulting in 18 points. The team won the battle on the glass as well, outrebounding Mercer 40-35. Wofford scored 34 points in the paint compared to 14 by Mercer.

Gabby Mundy led the team with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while Maddie Heiss followed behind with 14 points and eight rebounds. Queen Ikhiuwu added 12 points as well. Heiss posted a team-high three assists and three steals. Courtney Swider rejected one shot.

Mercer started the game off with four unanswered points to take an early lead. Gabby Mundy scored a basket plus the foul to get Wofford on the board, as the team trailed 4-3. With the game tied at nine-all, Wofford would use an 11-2 run to take an eight-point advantage with 1:10 left in the quarter. The team would end the frame leading 21-15.

Four-straight points from Mercer to start the second quarter shortened the Wofford lead to two points, 21-19. Wofford responded, however, going on a 10-2 run to take a double-digit lead with 5:26 left in the half. Mercer would cut the lead to four points, but Mia Flor scored a layup to make it 37-31 at the end of the first half.

A three-pointer from the top of the key by Maddie Heiss to start the second half furthered Wofford's lead to nine points, 40-31. That was the start of a 14-6 run by the Terriers, as Wofford would go up by as many as 14 points with 3:16 remaining in the third quarter. Eight consecutive points from the Bears brought Mercer back within six points, however. Mercer followed that up with a basket on the next possession, but both teams would go without a field goal for the next three minutes after that.
