SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team opened the weekend with a 15-9 win against Valparaiso on Friday evening at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers are now 4-1 to start their season.
Friday night starter
Kenny Michaels (2-0) pitched five innings, giving up three hits and three runs, while striking out seven batters.
Branton Little,
Austin Laughlin,
Cole Draper and
Sheldon Egger all made appearances in relief.
Champ Davis closed out the win pitching for 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and striking out four batters to earn the save.
Cade Collins led the Terriers with three runs on two hits, including a double.
Niko Brini had one hit and scored four runs, along with an RBI, and stolen base.
The Terriers got on the board first to start the game.
Keeton Burroughs hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Brini for a 1-0 edge. The game continued to go in Wofford's favor as the Terriers would hold the Beacons to only one hit in the first four innings. Meanwhile, Wofford was hot at the plate, bringing in six more runs to lead 7-0 going into the fifth inning.
Valpo didn't back down from the deficit and put three runs on the board to start the fifth, cutting Wofford's lead to 7-3. Collins led off with a statement double to give the Terriers energy going into the bottom of the sixth inning. A
Logan Tribble double and
Andrew Mannelly single would further push Wofford's lead to 11-5. The six-run sixth inning ended with pinch hitter Hunter Herdon adding a single to bring in two runners to extend the Terriers 13-5. The Beacons plated four runs in the seventh but would come up short in the eighth and ninth innings with Davis at mound. Davis would grab his first save of the season and secure the 15-9 win for the Terriers with a strikeout to end the game.
