CLINTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team defeated Presbyterian College 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Elton Pollock Field. The Terriers (14-8) scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed in the game.
John Gray (1-0) started and pitched for four innings, giving up just two hits with four strikeouts.
PJ Fitzpatrick and
Cade Bouknight followed in relief. Bouknight did not allow a hit in 2.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Davis Rivers and
Branton Little followed from the bullpen to close out the road win.
Logan Tribble led the Terriers with two runs on three hits. Tribble also had two stolen bases.
Hunter Herndon added one run on two hits with five RBI.
The Terriers led off with a walk to
Cade Collins and he advanced on an error and passed ball. A sacrifice fly from
Niko Brini brought in Collins to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. With two outs and two on base,
Hunter Herndon drove in both runners on a single to advance Wofford's lead to 3-0.
John Gray and the Terriers' bullpen would be the highlight, as Gray would keep Presbyterian's batting order to only two hits in four innings. The Terriers' pitching would hold the Blue Hose scoreless with just three hits in the first seven innings.
Hunter Herndon would score in the fourth inning off a wild pitch to give the Terriers a 4-0 edge. Wofford would score two more runs in the fifth inning, one off a balk to bring in
Logan Tribble and a sacrifice fly from Herndon to bring in
Ben Timblin to have a 6-0 ball game. Herndon would continue his solid outing at the plate in the seventh inning with another sacrifice fly to center field, bringing
Marc Quarrie home for a 7-0 lead. The Blue Hose found their first runs of the night with a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Terriers' lead to 7-2. Wofford closed out their win in Clinton with two more runs in the ninth.
Logan Tribble doubled, and Quarrie reached first on an error, which allowed pinch runner
Andrew Mannelly to score.
Hunter Herndon would end his night with another RBI single to make it a 9-2 contest. The Blue Hose were retired in order in the bottom the ninth to end the game.
