CINCINNATI, Ohio –The Wofford baseball team dropped the series opener 8-1 against Xavier on Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Musketeers took an early 8-0 lead, and the Terriers (14-9) looked for momentum in late innings but were unable to rally.
Cullen Condon made the start and pitched three innings, giving up five hits and two runs, while striking out two batters.
Cade Bouknight and
Cole Draper followed in relief. Bouknight pitched for 4.1 innings, giving up six hits and six runs, while striking out three batters. Draper closed out for the Terriers pitching for 0.2 inning, giving up just one hit.
Cade Collins started the ball game with a leadoff double to center field to put the Terriers in scoring position. However, the Musketeers pitching left him stranded at second. Both teams wouldn't see any runs on the board till the third inning, when Xavier scored two runs in the bottom half to bring it to a 2-0 game. The Musketeers would keep the momentum in the fourth inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run homer to left field. Down by an 8-0 score, the Terriers looked to gain their first run of the afternoon. Wofford wouldn't see this run until the seventh inning when
Tanner Hardin hit an RBI single to bring in
Lucas Manning to cut the game to 8-1. The Terriers looked to cut the Musketeers' lead in the ninth with a walk to
Marc Quarrie, a single by
Hunter Herndon and a walk for
Tanner Hardin to load the bases with two outs, but a ground out ended the game.
