Volleyball Announces Return of Alex Scharpenberg to Staff

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford head volleyball coach Lynze Roos announced the return of Alex Scharpenberg to her staff on Monday morning.

"It is wonderful to bring Alex back to Wofford," said head coach Lynze Roos. "He is an outstanding coach, and he has had a positive impact on each program he has worked with at every level. I am excited for his training skills this spring and to see our growth from his on-court coaching."

Scharpenberg returns to Wofford after spending the last three seasons at USC Upstate as an assistant coach. During the 2025 season, Scharpenberg helped lead the Spartans to 14 wins and a .500 record for just the second time since 2015. The team earned a program-record five All-Big South selections, including the Big South Setter of the Year and a First-Team All-Big South selection.

In 2024, Scharpenberg helped guide the team to an 8-6 record in Big South play – the second-highest conference win total in USC Upstate's Division I era. Upstate finished above .500 in Big South play for the second time since 2007. He helped the team to four all-conference honorees as well.

In Scharpenberg's first season at USC Upstate, he helped the team to its second largest (+6) win total improvement in the program's Division I era. With his help, the Spartans saw improvement in all six major statistical categories, including the team's best hitting percentage since 2008. Scharpenberg assisted with the development of four All-Big South selections.

Scharpenberg spent the 2022 season on staff at Wofford. He helped lead Wofford to a SoCon-best .182 opponent hitting percentage, ranking the team 56th nationally. The Terriers finished second in the conference in assists per set (11.92), blocks per set (2.23), hitting percentage (.226) and kills per set (13.01). Scharpenberg helped guide the team to three All-SoCon selections. Second-Team All-SoCon selection Millie Loehr led the conference with a .391 hitting percentage – a single-season program record.

In 2021, Scharpenberg spent the season with the Converse Valkyries. In addition to his work in collegiate volleyball, Scharpenberg has worked with the Stars Volleyball Club. He was selected as a finalist for the LOVB 17s Coach of the Year and helped lead a team to the 17U Premier AAU National Championship. Scharpenberg earned a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership with a minor in coaching from Central Michigan University in 2022.
