SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team started Big South play with a win over the Longwood Lancers, 22-9, on Wednesday afternoon in Gibbs Stadium. The 34 points (22 goals and 12 assists) are tied for the most in program history, matching the mark set against Howard (4/18/19) and New Haven (2/27/26).
Wofford (3-7, 1-0) was led by five goals and two assists from
Olivia Graebner.
McKenzie Moeller had four goals, while
Mia Leon had three goals and an assist.
Katie Brosseau had four assists, adding a goal as well. The Terriers held the shot advantage, 43-17. Wofford had 32 ground balls to Longwood's 25, led by
Barrett Rowe's seven. Wofford caused 12 turnovers to the Lancers' 6, with Leon causing three herself.
Hannah Taylor made five saves with a .357 save percentage.
The Lancers found the net first after Wofford turned the ball over after the initial draw control. It took the Terriers until the 11:30 minute mark to equalize.
McKenzie Moeller was the one to break the seal after a pass from
Katie Brosseau. The Lancers grabbed the lead back three minutes later.
Olivia Graebner lifted the Terriers into the lead with a free position and an unassisted goal. Graebner was unselfish, assisting
Carlie Cutinella to extend the lead with 1:23 left in the quarter. Moeller added one more to end the quarter with the lead for the fourth time this season, 5-2.
Longwood grabbed the first goal of the second quarter after three minutes.
Mia Leon nullified their goal from the pass of Brosseau. The Terriers extended their advantage after the Longwood defense scored on its own goal. The Lancers were able to grab one goal back before Graebner dished one out to Brosseau. Longwood was able to stay within striking distance with another goal 30 seconds after. Moeller grabbed her third goal on the day with 5:40 left in the half, with
Ella Bartlett on the assist. The Lancers refused to let the Terriers run away, scoring two goals before the end of the half, 9-7.
Sara Fenwick found Cutinella in front of the goal after four minutes to open up scoring in the second half. Longwood converted a free position shot after four more minutes. Graebner rifled a shot past the goalkeeper 30 seconds later, but Longwood responded within a minute themselves for an 11-9 margin. Leon found the net on two different free position shots to push the lead back to four.
Emma Stalteri and Moeller each added a goal before the end of the quarter, 15-9.
Brosseau found Stalteri to extend Wofford's goal streak to five within two minutes of the quarter. Graebner scored back-to-back unassisted goals. Laur Montagna scored her first of the season to give Wofford a ten-goal advantage.
Ainsley Towle, Montagna, and
Sarah Carter Nowery added goals to cap of the game with 11 unanswered goals, 22-9.
Wofford will continue conference play at Gardner-Webb on Saturday, March 28. The Terriers will travel to the Runnin' Bulldogs at 5 p.m. in Boling Springs, North Carolina, with all action streamed on ESPN+.
