SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team swept UNC Greensboro after a 6-3 win in their series finale Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers (19-9, 3-0) earned runs in the third inning before the Spartans (12-17, 1-5) tied it in the seventh, but crucial runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings lifted Wofford to take home the sweep.
Cade Bouknight started on the mound for the Terriers, throwing for a season-long six innings. Bouknight gave up six hits and one run, while striking out three batters. PJ Fitpatrick and
Champ Davis followed in relief. Davis (3-0) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out one batter.
Logan Tribble led the way at the plate for Wofford with three hits and four RBI.
Hunter Herndon followed with one hit and two RBI.
Both teams had two scoreless innings to start the game, as was the case on Friday and Saturday. The Terriers were quick to retire the Spartans in the top of the third inning. Three walks would start the Terriers half of the inning to load the bases.
Logan Tribble cleared the bases with a double to left field to boost the Terriers 3-0 over UNCG. The next two innings saw quick 1-2-3 action before the Spartans had a solo homer in the sixth for a 3-1 score. UNCG kept the momentum, hitting two singles to start the seventh inning. A groundout would put a run on the board for the Spartans, cutting the Terriers' lead to 3-2. UNCG would enter the stretch with one more run off an RBI single to left field to tie the ball game 3-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, a single from
Ben Timblin was followed by a walk for
Marc Quarrie to put Wofford in scoring position.
Hunter Herndon, on a 1-1 count, singled deep into left field with an error on the play that drove Timblin and Quarrie home, giving the Terriers a 5-3 lead.
Champ Davis retired the Spartans in order in the top of the eighth inning.
Lucas Manning led off the eighth with a double to give the Terriers a chance to score. With two outs and
Cade Collins on base after a walk,
Logan Tribble singled out deep to right field to score Manning and give the Terriers a 6-3 lead.
Champ Davis closed it out with a strikeout looking to secure the series sweep over UNCG.
