COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team lost a midweek match-up against the University of South Carolina 11-1 in seven innings at Founders Field on Tuesday night. The Terriers (19-10) trailed 2-1 after four innings, but the Gamecocks scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away.
John Gray made the midweek start for the Terriers, pitching 1.2 innings. Gray (1-1) gave up four hits and two runs while striking out five batters.
Branton Little,
Hiram Lewis,
Champ Davis,
Austin Laughlin, and
Davis Rivers followed in relief.
The Terriers started off strong with a leadoff double from
Cade Collins, but quick outs retired the batting order. South Carolina was quick to put runs on the board, scoring two unearned runs in the first inning. Two scoreless innings followed before the Terriers scored their first run of the night in the fourth.
Logan Tribble was hit by a pitch and
Marc Quarrie reached base on a fielding error and stole second to put the Terriers in scoring position.

In the bottom of the fifth with two outs, the Gamecocks would hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to 5-1. They continued with another three-run homer for an 8-1 game before a strikeout ended the frame. After the Terriers left one runner on base in the sixth inning, South Carolina scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 10-1 advantage. The Terriers stranded another runner in the top of the seventh after a single by
Alex Myers. South Carolina had an RBI single to end the game 11-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
