NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Wofford baseball team (9-4) completed an 11-8 comeback win to secure the first game of their three-game series against Belmont Friday night at E.S. Rose Park. The Bruins took a 4-0 lead after the first inning before the Terriers tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning. Five runs by Wofford in the sixth inning put the Terriers in the lead, and they held on for the win.
Kenny Michaels (4-0) started for the Terriers and pitched for five innings, giving up seven hits and five runs, while striking out six batters.
Champ Davis went the final four innings, giving up five hits and three runs, striking out six batters earning his second save.
Andrew Mannelly led the Terriers with two runs, two hits, including a solo home run, and four RBI.
Cade Collins and
Ben Timblin followed with two runs and one hit each.
The Terriers gave up four runs in the first inning to the Bruins. Wofford wouldn't pick up momentum until the fourth inning when
Logan Tribble doubled to right field.
Andrew Mannelly and
Hunter Herndon each walked to load the bases.
Harrison Campi with a 1-0 count would double to left field to bring in two runs, cutting Belmont's lead 4-2. A sacrifice fly by
Lucas Manning made it a 4-3 game. The Bruins and Terriers would each score a run in the fifth inning, but Wofford would come out swinging in the sixth.
Wofford loaded the bases on a Belmont error, single and a walk.
Niko Brini had a fielder's choice, but an error on the play would bring in two runs. A sacrifice fly from
Ben Timblin and a two-RBI single from
Andrew Mannelly would give Wofford their first lead of the night over Belmont to bring the score 9-5. The Bruins, looking for a comeback, would score three runs in the seventh, but Mannelly's second home run of the season in the eighth would continue to give the Terriers the edge going into the last inning. The Terriers and
Champ Davis would close out an 11-8 win over the Bruins to take the first win of the series.
