NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Wofford College baseball team (10-5) split a Sunday doubleheader against Belmont to captured the series win on Sunday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park after losing 2-3 in the first game and winning 11-1 in the second game. Saturday's game was postponed to Sunday as a doubleheader going to seven innings due to weather in the area.
Game One:
Saturday regular starter
Alec Bouchard took the mound to start the Terriers off. Bouchard (3-1) pitched for 5.1 innings, giving up four hits and three runs while striking out seven batters.
Hiram Lewis would serve as relief to Bouchard, pitching for 0.2 innings.
The Terriers took the early lead in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. After a
Cade Collins double to center field,
Niko Brini would bunt for a single advancing
Cade Collins to third, then a throwing error by Belmont would allow Collins to score the first run of the day for Wofford.
Hunter Herndon at the plate with bases loaded sacrifices a fly out to centerfield to bring in Brini to give Wofford a 2-0 lead. These would be the last opportunities for Wofford to score for the remainder of the game. The Bruins starting pitcher and relief would keep the Terriers to just three more hits. Belmont would score one run in the first inning, but Wofford would remain in the lead 2-1. The Bruins would see two solo home runs, one in the fifth inning to tie the game 2-2 and another in the sixth to seal the Terriers' loss 3-2.
Game Two:
Freshman
PJ Fitzpatrick saw his first collegiate start at the mound in game two of today's doubleheader. Fitzpatrick (1-1) pitched for 2.0 innings, allowing only two hits and striking out one batter.
Branton Little was the relief from the bullpen, pitching for 5.0 innings. Little allowed four hits and one run while striking out three batters to secure the Terriers' series win over the Bruins.
Ben Timblin led the Terriers with three runs, three hits and game high of five RBI.
Niko Brini followed with three runs, three hits and two RBI.
The Terriers found themselves in the same situation starting the second game of today's doubleheader.
Ben Timblin on a 3-1 count hit a home run to center field to bring in two runs to out the Terriers on board first. The Terriers didn't stop there,
Ben Timblin would ground out to Belmont's short stop bringing
Niko Brini home to further Wofford's lead 4-0.
Hunter Herndon would follow with a single to left field to advance the score 5-0. The Bruins would see one run the whole game from a solo home run scored in the third. The Terriers would see one run in the fifth but would have an explosive five-run seventh inning. With back-to-back doubles from
Niko Brini and
Cade Collins, the Terriers had the momentum to continue their scoring run. A
Ben Timblin single and sacrifice bunt from
Brady Gold would help seal the 11-1 win over the Bruins.
