SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's tennis team won a close 4-3 match on Saturday afternoon over Presbyterian College at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Blue Hose won the doubles point, but the Terriers responded by taking four of the six singles matches for the win.
In doubles, Wofford had a 4-3 lead in all three matches.
Grace Agster and
Quinn Bernthal closed out the #1 position with a 6-3 win. The Blue Hose won at the #2 position with a 6-4 score. The #3 position was tied at 6-6 and won in the tiebreaker 7-2 to give the Blue Hose the doubles point.
Wofford took the first set in four of the six singles matches.
Katie Godfree won at the #3 position for the Terriers, but the Blue Hose answered with a win at the #6 position.
Grace Agster and
Quinn Bernthal gave Wofford a 3-2 lead in the match with wins at the #2 and #1 positions, respectively. The Blue Hose were able to tie the match with a three-set win at the #5 position.
The overall match would be decided at the #4 position. Wofford's
Ella Suk won the first set 6-4 but lost the second set 7-5. In the third set, it was tied at 4-4 when Suk broke serve to take a 5-4 advantage. She held serve for the 6-4 win, which secured the match for Wofford.
"I am really proud of the way we bounced back after losing the doubles point," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "We showed tremendous heart and grit throughout singles, and I could not be more proud of this team."
Wofford, playing its third match in the last four days, is now 6-3 on the season. They will begin Southern Conference play on Friday, March 13, at East Tennessee State.
