Wofford Women’s Lacrosse Secures Program’s First Win Over Paladins

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team came back from a four-goal deficit to defeat the Furman Paladins, 16-12, on Wednesday evening in Paladin Stadium. Wofford held the Paladins from scoring in the third quarter to come back from being down at halftime for their first win over the Paladins in program history.

"I think the turning point was we knew who we are and what we are good at, and getting back to that," said head coach Jessie Aguglia. "I am just really happy and proud of them. We came off of four games in eight days, so it's been a lot these past three weeks. I'm just glad they could pull it through, and no one deserves it more than them."

Wofford (5-7, 3-0) was led by four goals and two assists from Olivia Graebner. She was accompanied by four goals and an assist from McKenzie Moeller. Carlie Cutinella and Mia Leon scored twice, with four other Terriers finding their names on the scoreboard.

"This is just the first step to our goals that we set at the beginning of the season," said redshirt sophomore Olivia Graebner. "I'm really excited for what this team can do."

The Terriers held the shot advantage, 37-30. Wofford and Furman each picked up 14 ground balls, led by Barrett Rowe's four. Wofford caused 10 turnovers to the Paladins' six, with Barret Rowe causing three herself. Norah Teff earned her first career win with three saves and a .500 save percentage.

The Paladins found the net first from a free position shot after three minutes of play. After having two green cards on the lead-up play, Wofford conceded one minute later. McKenzie Moeller was able to find Ainsley Towle in front of goal, looking to bring the momentum into Wofford's hands, but the Terriers could only hold the Paladins off for 1:30 minutes. The Quarter would not see much action for the remaining six minutes, ending with Furman holding a 3-1 advantage.

Furman extended their lead three minutes into the quarter again, but the Terriers were able to snap back after 1:30 minutes, with Mia Leon converting a free position shot. One minute later, Ella Davis spun her defender and placed the ball past the goalkeeper to bring the Terriers within one. The Paladins pushed back with three goals before Moeller could find one for the Terriers with 5:21 left to play in the first half. Furman scored another, but Olivia Graebner was able to keep the Terriers within striking distance with a free-position goal. The Paladins grabbed the momentum heading into the locker room, scoring with 25 seconds left to play, 9-5.

Graebner opened the scoring in the second half within one minute by bursting past her defender. She found another two minutes to spark the Terriers to life. Leon and Moeller tacked on goals to tie the game up, 9-9, with eight minutes to play in the quarter. Graebner found the goal to push Wofford ahead just 40 seconds later with a well-placed bounce shot. Scoring seemed to have stopped for the quarter, but Katie Brosseau found a goal for her birthday with 51 seconds remaining. Wofford went into the final quarter with the lead after holding the Paladins from scoring in the quarter, 11-9.

Carlie Cutinella found the back of the net seven seconds into the final quarter off the pass from Olivia Graebner. Moeller found another before the Paladins were able to find the net to break Wofford's eight-goal streak. Leon found Cutinella to resume scoring for the Terriers just 56 seconds later. Furman seemed to find their footing in front of net, scoring twice with seven minutes to play to keep Wofford from running away in the game, 14-12. It took two minutes for either team to find a goal. That goal came from a free-position shot by Ella Bartlett after Wofford had missed three straight free-position attempts. Moeller found another with less than two minutes to play to ice the game, 16-12

Wofford will continue conference play against High Point on Saturday, April 4. The Terriers will host the Panthers at 1 p.m. in Gibbs Stadium with all action streamed on ESPN+.
