SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team shut out The Citadel 2-0 in the series opener on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers (23-11, 5-1) edged the Bulldogs (16-17, 3-4) with the help of starting pitcher
Alec Bouchard's career-high of 12 strikeouts to secure the 2-0 win.
Alec Bouchard (6-2) pitched for seven innings and threw a career-high 12 strikeouts, while only giving up five hits and one walk.
Branton Little followed in relief, pitching for two innings to earn the save. Little gave up one hit and one walk, while striking out two batters. At the plate,
Logan Tribble led the Terriers with one run scored on one hit.
Niko Brini and
Hunter Herndon followed with Brini having one hit and one RBI and Herndon with two hits and one RBI.
Bouchard held off the Bulldog's batting order with two straight strikeouts to get the first inning started. The Terriers didn't see their first hit of the night until the second inning when
Hunter Herndon singled to center field.
Lucas Manning and
Tanner Hardin walked to load the bases for the Terriers, but a strikeout ended the scoring chance.
Wofford struck first in the fifth after
Brady Gold walked and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Cade Collins.
Niko Brini doubled down the right field line to drive home Gold and give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. Both teams would retire their batters in order for the next two innings.
Logan Tribble led off with a single to put the Terriers on base in the bottom of the eighth. Tribble stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error to put Wofford in scoring position.
Hunter Herndon hit a single to right field to drive home Tribble for a 2-0 advantage.
Branton Little held off the Bulldogs with a strikeout to start the ninth inning, before the Bulldogs singled to center field and stole second base to put themselves in scoring position. Little secured the Terriers' series opener win 2-0 with a strikeout to end the game.
