Wofford Baseball Clinches Series in Close 6-5 Win over The Citadel

SPARTANBURG, S.C.—The Wofford baseball team clinched their third conference series in a row with a close 6-5 win over The Citadel on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers (24-11, 7-1) took an early lead at 5-3 after three innings, but with Wofford up 6-3 the Bulldogs (16-18, 3-5) scored two runs in the eighth inning make it a one-run game before Champ Davis closed the door in the ninth.

Cullen Condon made the start for the Terriers, pitching five innings. Condon (4-1) gave up four hits and three runs, while striking out four batters. John Gray followed in relief for three innings, giving up three hits and two runs with three strikeouts. Champ Davis closed it out for Wofford, giving up one hit in an inning on the mound to earn his fifth save of the season. Andrew Mannelly led the Terriers with two runs on two hits with two RBI. Tanner Hardin followed with one run on two hits with three RBI.

The Bulldogs struck first with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead, but the Terriers came back in the bottom of the first to load the bases with two outs. Andrew Mannelly hit a single down left field to drive home Logan Tribble and Marc Quarrie to boost the Terriers 2-1 over The Citadel. The Bulldogs didn't hesitate in the second inning, starting it off with a single. An RBI double would tie the game at 2-2 before a fielder's choice lifted The Citadel 3-2 over Wofford.

The Terriers had just one hit in the second but held off the Bulldogs with two runners on base in the top of the third. Hunter Herndon led off with a double to start the Terriers in the bottom half of the frame before Andrew Mannelly was walked to put Wofford in scoring position. Tanner Hardin hit a home run deep to right field to give the Terriers a 5-3 lead. A quick three-up, three-down fourth inning followed as the Terriers ramped up to score one more run in the fifth inning off an RBI double by Brady Gold to drive Mannelly home for a 6-3 scoreline. Two scoreless innings followed before the Bulldogs came back in the eighth to cut the Terriers' lead.

After a hit by pitch, a single, and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, a passed ball plated a run to bring it 6-4. An RBI single cut the lead to 6-5. Brady Gold made a diving catch to end the Bulldogs inning. After a quick 1-2-3 inning for the Terriers, the Bulldogs led off the ninth with a single, but a double play followed by a line out ended the ball game, securing the series with a 6-5 win for the Terriers.
