SPARTANBURG, S.C.—The Wofford baseball team swept The Citadel with a 5-3 win in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers (25-11, 8-1) took the early lead, but the Bulldogs (16-19, 3-6) came back in the seventh with two runs to tie the ball game at 3-3. After the stretch, Wofford scored two runs to regain the lead and held off The Citadel in the final two innings to take the series. With today's victory, head coach
J.J. Edwards earned his 100
th career win in just three seasons at the helm of the program.
"It's the people," coach Edwards said. "It's our coaches that have been with us for three years. It's the team. I'm fortunate to have a good support staff, good administration, great assistant coaches and players who really by into what we're doing. I understand it says a 100 next to my name, but it's really a Wofford thing."
Cade Bouknight started for the Terriers, pitching two innings. Bouknight gave up one run with one strikeout.
Austin Laughlin,
Miller Alston,
PJ Fitzpatrick, and
Champ Davis followed in relief from the Terriers' bullpen. Fitzpatrick (2-4) threw one inning, giving up one hit and two runs with one strikeout.
Branton Little closed for Wofford for the second time on the weekend, striking out two batters while holding the Bulldogs without a hit in one inning to earn the save.
Cade Collins led the
Terriers with two runs on three hits with one RBI.
Logan Tribble followed, going 3-of-4 at the plate with one RBI.Â
The Bulldogs opened the game with a pair of walks before a sacrifice fly to right field gave them a 1-0 lead. The Terriers responded as
Cade Collins hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly from
Logan Tribble brought home Collins to tie the game at 1-1. A walk by
Marc Quarrie put the Terriers on base once again.
Hunter Herndon singled deep to right field to score Quarrie, giving Wofford a 2-1 lead.
Both teams saw just one hit in the next two scoreless innings before the Terriers came out in the fourth to break the deadlock. Two quick outs started the inning for Wofford, but
Cade Collins gave the team some life with a single to right field.
Niko Brini followed with a single to drive home Collins for a 3-1 lead.
Logan Tribble had the last base hit of the inning before the Terriers were retired. No runs would be scored again until the seventh inning, when The Citadel had an RBI double and ground out to score two runs to tie the game 3-3.
The Terriers came out of the stretch looking to break the tie. With one out,
Lucas Manning hit a single and
Tanner Hardin hit a double to drive Manning home to boost Wofford's lead to 4-3. A sacrifice bunt by
Brady Gold moved Hardin to third base before
Cade Collins singled to center field to drive home Hardin for a 5-3 score.
Champ Davis and
Branton Little did not allow a hit by the Bulldogs in the last two innings. In the final frame, Little struck out two batters to help secure the series sweep for Wofford and take home his second save of the weekend.
