Wofford Baseball Defeats UNC Asheville 16-1 in Seven Innings

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –The Wofford baseball team defeated UNC Asheville 16-1 in seven innings at Greenwood Field on Friday night. The Terriers (27-11, 8-1) scored in six-straight innings and Marc Quarrie hit two home runs to cruise by the Bulldogs (16-22, 4-8) to take the first game of their weekend series.

Alec Bouchard made his tenth start of the season for the Terriers. Bouchard (7-2) gave up only four hits and one run while striking out four batters in five innings. Cole Draper followed in relief, pitching two innings while striking out three batters, a season high. Marc Quarrie led the Terriers with three runs on three hits, with a grand slam and a two-run home run for six RBI. Brady Gold followed with one run on three hits and one RBI with Cade Collins adding one run on two hits and one RBI.

The Terriers didn't hesitate to get their bats going with a leadoff bunt single by Cade Collins. With one out on the board and bases loaded, designated hitter Marc Quarrie hit a grand slam out to deep center field to lift the Terriers to a 4-0 lead. The Terriers kept the momentum after a quick three up, three down inning by the Bulldogs. Lucas Manning leadoff with a double with a single by Brady Gold to put Wofford in scoring position. A hit by Niko Brini drove home Manning for a 5-0 advantage. Wofford did not allow a hit in the bottom of the second by the Bulldogs and another hit by Quarrie led the Terriers off in the top of the third. Tanner Hardin put a ball into play at third base but a throwing error on the play allowed two runs to score for an 8-0 lead in the third.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning to retire the Bulldogs in the bottom of the third inning, Ben Timblin hit a triple to drive Logan Tribble home for a 9-0 score in the top of the fourth. Marc Quarrie on a 3-2 count hit his second home run of the night to drive in two runs. The Terriers' batting order didn't stop there as Brady Gold hit a two-RBI double to give Wofford a 13-0 advantage. Cade Collins followed with an RBI single to bring Gold home for a 14-0 game in the middle of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs saw their first run on a solo home run to cut the Terriers lead to 14-1. The Terriers kept their run-streak alive in the fifth, adding another run off a passed ball for a 15-1 ball game. The Bulldogs had two hits in the fifth, but Wofford's fielding kept them off the scoreboard. The Terriers entered the sixth inning with a leadoff single by freshman Noah Gerrick. A single by Keeton Burroughs drove home the last run the Terriers would see in the game to lift them 16-1. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs had one runner on base when a double play and a strikeout ended the game.
