RADFORD, Va. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team staved off a second-half comeback from The Radford Highlanders, 15-13, in their final regular season game on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Radford, Virginia. Wofford held a five-goal margin at halftime, but the Highlanders scored five straight in the third quarter to tie the game up. Wofford scored the last two goals in the game to remain undefeated against the Highlanders, winning their fifth game in the series.
Wofford (8-9, 6-2) was led by a career-high seven points from
Carlie Cutinella, including six goals and an assist.
Katie Brosseau was right behind her with six points off two goals and four assists.
McKenzie Moeller scored three goals and two assists, including the assist on the game-winning goal. The Terriers held the shot advantage, 35-28. Radford picked up 23 ground balls, while Wofford grabbed 21, with
Barrett Rowe and
Laney Reh picking up four each. Wofford caused 11 turnovers to the Highlanders' 15, with Reh causing three. The Terriers were dominant off the draw, grabbing 22 to Radford's eight, with Vivian Choimento grabbing 16 draw controls.
Radford went up first with a free-position goal after two minutes of play. It took just one more minute for
McKenzie Moeller to open things up for the Terriers, adding a second goal 40 seconds later.
Carlie Cutinella found herself on the scoresheet with eight minutes left to play in the opening quarter. The Highlanders kept the pressure on the Terriers, but
Olivia Graebner was able to place a shot into the bottom right corner to push back less than a minute later.
Ella Bartlett followed it up shortly after with a powerful shot from outside the eight-meter arc to make it 5-2. Wofford hoped to hold their three-goal margin into the quarter break, but the Highlanders were able to grab a goal back during a woman-up situation. Wofford nearly added another goal in the final minute of play, but Radford recovered the saved shot before scoring on the other end of the field to finish the first quarter, 5-4.
Rain began to fall during the break, but this did not stop Cutinella from grabbing her second goal of the day within 45 seconds of the draw. Moeller followed suit with the feed from
Katie Brosseau finding her right in front of the goal. Radford took advantage of another woman-up situation to score its first goal of the second quarter.
Kaitlyn Bellanca took momentum back into Wofford's hands with 11 minutes to play in the first half. After a long stretch of a goal drought, Cutinella grabbed two goals for the Terriers in the final four minutes to double the Highlanders at halftime, 10-5.
Radford was able to open scoring in the second half after 2:39 seconds. The Terriers struggled to find their footing in the second half, allowing the Highlanders to tie the game up with five straight goals. It was not until three minutes remained in the quarter that Cutinella and Brosseau were able to break the seal for the Terriers with two goals to push back ahead of Radford before the end of the quarter, 12-10.
The Highlanders closed the gap to one after five minutes of play in the final frame. Two minutes later, Radford was able to convert a free position shot to tie the game back up at 12-12. Brosseau scored with seven minutes to play in the game from Wofford's first free position goal of the day after three attempts. It took two minutes for the Highlanders to tie the game up again, but
McKenzie Moeller was able to find
Carlie Cutinella for the go-ahead goal one minute later.
Emma Stalteri scored her first goal of the day with two minutes on the clock to give the Terriers a two-goal cushion. Radford charged down the field in an attempt to push the game into overtime, but a crucial turnover caused by Cutinella secured the win for Wofford, 15-13.
The Terriers will host the first round of the Big South tournament as the No. 3 seed on Tuesday, April 28, at 7 p.m. Wofford will take on the yet-to-be-determined No. 6 seed in Gibbs Stadium, with the winner taking on No. 2 High Point in Macon, Georgia, on Friday, May 1, at 7 p.m.
