Wofford Women’s Lacrosse Takes Down Winthrop In Overtime

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team came back in the final quarter to take the Winthrop Eagles into overtime before winning, 13-12, on Wednesday evening at Eagle Field. The Terriers had an 8-3 lead before seven unanswered goals by the Eagles. After Winthrop took a 12-9 lead, the Terriers scored four straight goals, including the game-winner in overtime.

"We knew this game was going to be emotional with us beating them in playoffs last year," said head coach Jessie Aguglia. "We knew going in that this was kind of going to be a playoff game, so we wanted to take it that serious."

Wofford (6-8, 4-1) was led by four goals and two assists from Emma Stalteri. With the four goals, Stalteri is tied with her teammate, Carlie Cutinella, for all-time goal scorer in Wofford history. Stalteri was accompanied by two goals and an assist from Olivia Graebner. McKenzie Moeller had her eleventh multi-goal game of the season with two goals. Five other Terriers found their names on the scoresheet. The Terriers held the shot advantage, 32-25. Winthrop picked up 19 ground balls, while Wofford grabbed 12, led by Graebner's three. Wofford caused 11 turnovers to the Eagles' ten, with Barrett Rowe causing three herself.

Emma Stalteri scored within the first minute to kick things off for the Terriers. The Eagles responded three minutes later with a goal of their own. Each team had its share of strong offensive efforts, but McKenzie Moeller was the one to separate the teams with a goal after being found by Emma Stalteri. Winthrop responded with two quick goals to grab their first lead of the game. Wofford fired two more chances off before the end of the quarter but was unable to equalize. The Eagles went into the first stoppage with a one-goal lead, 3-2.

Stalteri found Moeller again to tie the game one minute into the second quarter. It took four more shots before the Terriers were able to regain the lead after Ella Bartlett rifled a shot into the bottom left corner. On the ensuing draw, Vivian Chiomento was able to control the ball and swerve through the Eagles' defense by herself to score her first of the season. Scoring stalled in the game for seven minutes, with both teams finding good chances, but Sara Fenwick was able to grab her first goal since Gardner-Webb (3/28) to open the game back up. Olivia Graebner got involved one minute later to send the Terriers into the half with a four-goal lead, 7-3.

Graebner came out quick in the third quarter with an unassisted goal 46 seconds after the draw. The tempo did not stay high, with a four-minute drought. Winthrop was able to crack the seal with 9:41 on the clock. They went on to score three more goals over the next five minutes, leading to a timeout from the Wofford bench. The Eagles were able to score two more before the end of the quarter to regain the lead, 9-8.

The Eagles' momentum continued into the final quarter, with Winthrop finding the back of the net after one minute. Katie Brosseau kept the pressure up with a goal to break Winthrop's seven-goal streak, but the Eagles pushed back just 15 seconds later. Winthrop grabbed one more before the Terriers could find the net again. Stalteri got Wofford back within striking distance, bursting past her defenders. Each team had its share of shots and defensive stops, but the game went into a deadlock for the next seven minutes. Stalteri broke the drought with another unassisted goal with 2:30 left to play in the game. The Terriers went into a full-frontal offense in an attempt to tie the game in the dying minutes, but Wofford turned the ball over. Wofford caused a turnover with under one minute to play and called a timeout to set up a play. That play resulted in Stalteri scoring her fourth goal of the game to tie it up and send the game into overtime, 12-12.

Wofford won the draw in overtime. The Terriers lost possession before getting the ball back. The Terriers charged forward into the offensive third. Olivia Graebner was able to find Kaitlyn Bellanca for the game-winning goal, one minute into extra time, 13-12.

Wofford will continue conference play against Presbyterian on Saturday, April 18. The Terriers will take on the Blue Hose for Senior Day at 1 p.m., with all action streamed on ESPN+.
