SPARTANBURG, S.C.—The Wofford baseball team took down Western Carolina 6-1 on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers had a dominant performance on the mound by
Alec Bouchard, allowing just one run on two hits for the complete game win. Wofford (31-15, 9-4) scored in the first inning before allowing one run from the Catamounts (29-17, 10-6) in the second inning, but Wofford scored four runs in the seventh and eighth innings to secure the series opener win.
Alec Bouchard (8-2) started for the Terriers and gave up only two hits and one run, while striking out a season-high 14 batters. Bouchard now has 86 strikeouts on the season.
Cade Collins led Wofford at the plate with two runs on two hits.
Marc Quarrie followed with two hits and one RBI, and
Lucas Manning with a home run and two runs scored.
The Terriers retired the Catamounts in order to open the first inning.
Cade Collins had a leadoff single in the bottom of the first before a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt advanced him to third.
Logan Tribble grounded out to score Collins for a 1-0 lead. Western Carolina opened the second inning with a solo home run to right field to tie the game.
Alec Bouchard then had three straight strikeouts to retire the Catamounts. The next two innings remained scoreless for the Terriers and Catamounts. With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning,
Lucas Manning hit a solo home run to left field to lift the Terriers to a 2-1 lead. The Terriers quickly retired the Catamounts once again in the sixth.
The Terriers left two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bouchard returned in the seventh to record three more strikeouts as Western Carolina left one runner stranded. Wofford opened up its half of the seventh inning with a hit by pitch and a walk.
Cade Collins followed with a bunt single to load the bases for the Terriers. With one out,
Logan Tribble hit a two-RBI single to advance Wofford 4-1. Another out followed before
Marc Quarrie hit an RBI single to make it a 5-1 advantage. The Catamounts had a quick three up, three down, inning in the eighth. A sacrifice fly by
Niko Brini gave the Terriers one more run for a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth, but the Terriers left the bases loaded.
Alec Bouchard and the Terriers' defense retired the Catamounts in order in the top of the ninth to secure the series opener win by a 6-1 score.
