Softball Defeats Western Carolina 5-2 to Earn Series Sweep

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College softball team used a strong third inning to defeat Western Carolina 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Hope Field. The Terriers improve to 33-17 on the season with a 10-11 record in conference play after earning their first series sweep of conference play.

Natalya Salo started in the series finale, only allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out two batters. Salo improves to 11-3 on the season after going 2-0 this weekend. Leading the way offensively was Kaytlin Greenwood who went 2-of-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Desirae Devine had a two RBI single. Kate Platte and Emry Masterson also finished with one RBI. Abbi Campbell went 2-of-3 from the plate. Kaytlin Greenwood and Desirae Devine finished with one stolen base apiece. The two teams were even at eight hits and no errors each.

Natalya Salo and company forced Western Carolina into a 1-2-3 inning to start the game, but the Catamounts were able to find one run in the second to take an early 1-0 lead. Wofford responded, however, tying it up in the bottom half of the frame. Kaytlin Greenwood singled to left field and would later steal second with one out. Emry Masterson singled up the middle to drive in Greenwood and even the game at one-all.

After a scoreless third inning from Western Carolina, Wofford added three more runs in the bottom of the third. Rivers Sampson reached first from a fielder's choice. Gracie Parker moved Sampson to second with a single to right field, which was followed by a double down the left field line from Kaytlin Greenwood to score Sampson. On the next at bat, Desirae Devine singled up the middle to drive in both Parker and Greenwood and give the team a 4-1 lead.

Both teams were quiet in the fourth and fifth innings, but Western Carolina scored a run in the sixth to make it a 4-2 deficit. The Terriers responded again, matching that run in the latter part of the inning to push the game back out to three runs, 5-2. Emry Masterson walked to start the inning, leading to a bunt single from Abbi Campbell on the next at bat. After a sacrifice bunt from Addison Lucier, Kate Platte drove in Masterson on a groundout. Natalya Salo and the defense kept Western Carolina off the board in the seventh, giving the team a 5-2 win and its first sweep of conference play.

Wofford will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for the Southern Conference Tournament on May 6-9. The team will find out its official seeding when the regular season concludes tomorrow.
