Wofford Terriers
Head Coach Mike Young
Opening Statement…….“To beat a quality team with two great players is really impressive. Donald Sims and Omar Carter are really good players in our league. I thought we needed to prepare for those two guys coming in, and defend against their ball screens – they run a lot of them. Donald Sims is a fabulous player in our league and tonight he went 4-8 shooting and had 14 points which is really good. Omar Carter had a real nice game too. However, we were able to get through the ball screens that they ran and we played great defense. We pride ourselves in ball screen defense. I, also would be remised if I did not mention Dahlman, this old rascal here has helped us win a bunch of games. When the going gets sticky he will have a crack at it, and he will deliver more times than not; as he has done so many times in his career.”
Describe your composure in the second half…..“My guys are old. They have been in so many situations like that. We knew the Mountaineers would take a stab at it. It was tied at half and then we were up seven up late, but Appalachian State still was hanging around. However, Tim Johnson, Jamar Diggs, Cam Rundles and Loesing are great for us. Man they do a lot and they have a lot of confidence. We always know we are going to figure it out no matter what the situation is. We are not going to be wide-eyed if the team hits a shot or two – we just keep competing. That is the mark of a veteran team.
Was the pressure mounting…..?.....“No way! It is like a circus in the locker room. There is no such thing as pressure with our team. They thrive in situations like that. I do not play poker, but the money is all in with this team. They are concerned with competing. You have to have fun. We are playing college basketball. How could you not have fun? This is not life or death. You just have to be a great teammate and work hard. If you are not having fun you are missing the boat.”
Talk about one of the unsung heroes(Kevin Giltner)….
“He is a big part of the team. He is a big deal. He does his job. He is capable of scoring more points if he wanted too. We even had him on Omar Carter at some points. He is a smart guy and a great teammate. We had him on a couple guys actually. Believe it or not, he only took one shot and hit a three. He might be labeled as an unsung hero because he does not average 16 points per game, but he is a huge part of what we do.”
Senior Forward Noah Dahlman
Talk about the last time you were in this building when you played so well against Chattanooga. ..Is there a comfort level in this arena?......“I would not say there is a comfort level to be honest. This is tournament time and you open the game with some jitters. It has a different atmosphere to it. It is win or go home. Appalachian State gave us a good game. They certainly played with us in the 1st half, but in the end we made more plays which was the difference.”
On keeping focus during the game…..“Cameron Rundles pumped us up throughout the whole game. He would not let us get down in any situation. I have to give him the credit for being the vocal leader. He is the heart and soul on this team when things are going good or bad. He was the first one to step and say, ‘hey we have to keep it together’ during the halftime break.”
Appalachian State Mountaineers
Head Coach Jason Capel
Opening Statement….“First of all, give a lot of credit to Wofford. They are a solid team and very sound in every aspect of the game. We fought, had a really good half, but ran out of gas. We had a solid year. Just really proud of the effort the three seniors gave this year. Just wish we could have sent them out on a higher note, but we fought and fell to a really good team.”
On the game:…..“We came here to play four games, but they (Wofford) are a good team. Let’s not shortchange them in any capacity. They are good, physical, and you have to beat them. They are not going to make mistakes. We missed a lot of points inside, and I think going 1-12 from three is the worst we have done all season. Give credit to Wofford because they had something to do with it. The first half was probably one of the best halves we played all year. We set the tone and brought the physicality to them. You have to do that for 40 minutes against them. When you lose you can hold your head high knowing you lost to a team as good as they are.”
On playing from behind:…..“Not so much as playing catch-up, but things happened in the game which caused some frustration. You have to persevere and play through it. For the most part we did do that and it makes the game a little tougher. There were some aspects of the game that were out of our control. You have to find a way to swing it in your favor. I think we got frustrated by that.”
On Wofford’s defensive play:…..“Wofford is a very good team. They are the best defensive team in the league by far.”
Senior Guard Donald Sims
On not making shots:…..“No excuses, but some of the credit goes to Wofford. They are a good defensive team. Sometimes shots just don’t fall. You just have to do better in other aspects (of the game) when shots aren’t falling.”
Junior Forward Andre Williamson
On defending Noah Dahlman…..“He is a great player. Dahlman isn’t going to give you anything. You have to defend him for 40 minutes. I feel like we had some lapses and he took advantage of them, which is what good players do.”
