Seven Terriers Named All-SoCon, Ayers Co-Coach of Year

SPARTANBURG, SC – Wofford College had seven players named to the Coaches All-Southern Conference Team. In addition, head coach Mike Ayers was named the co-coach of the year with Elon’s Pete Lembo.

For the Terriers, Kevious Johnson and Seth Goldwire earned first team honors, while Derek Wooten, Fenn Allen, James Gonsoulin, Brian Kemp and Dan Tavani earned second team honors from the conference’s coaches.

Mike Ayers has earned his fourth Southern Conference Coach of the Year honor. He also received the honor in 2000, 2002 and 2003. He is in his twentieth season as head coach of the Terriers and is the school’s all-time leader in victories with a record of 131-92-1.

Seth Goldwire, a junior linebacker from Guyton, Georgia, led Wofford with 90 tackles on the season. He was seventh in the conference in total tackles on the season and also had 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

Kevious Johnson, a senior running back from Fitzgerald, Georgia, led the Terriers with 1,029 yards rushing this season. He scored nine rushing touchdowns and also had three receiving touchdowns. Johnson was named All-SoCon second team in 2003.

Tight end Fenn Allen, a junior from Concord, N.C., played in all eleven games and was second on the team in receiving with 15 catches for 280 yards. He also scored one touchdown on the season and was a key piece in the Terriers success in the running game.

A senior from Tulsa, Oklahoma, James Gonsoulin repeats as a member of the All-SoCon second team defense. He started all eleven games for the Terriers at defensive end and was fifth on the team in total tackles. He was second on the team with six tackles for loss and added 2.5 sacks.

A senior cornerback from Bowling Green, Fla., Brian Kemp started all eleven games at cornerback for the Terriers. He tied for the team lead with three interceptions and added 34 tackles on the season. Kemp led Wofford with 12 passes broken up on the season, which was second in the conference.

Dan Tavani, a senior safety from Easton, Pa., earned second team defense honors for the second straight season. He started the first six games of the season before suffering a torn ACL. He returned to action after missing three games to play in the final two regular season games. Tavani finished seventh on the team in total tackles and had two interceptions, including one at Chattanooga.

Offensive lineman Derek Wooten, a junior from Rock Hill, S.C., started all eleven games at right tackle for the Terriers. On the season, he 110 knockdowns and helped lead the way for Wofford to gain 3,498 yards rushing on the season.

Georgia Southern senior quarterback Jayson Foster was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year. Appalachian State defensive back Corey Lynch was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. Elon quarterback Scott Riddle earned Freshman of the Year recognition. Appalachian State’s Kerry Brown is the 2007 recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy.

Southern Conference regular season co-champion Appalachian State placed 11 players on the all-conference team with six players on offense, four on defense and one specialist. Georgia Southern had nine players gain All-Southern Conference honors including five on offense, three on defense and one specialist. Conference co-champion Wofford had seven players honored including three on offense and four on defense.

Wofford finished the regular season with an 8-3 overall record and were 5-2 in the conference. The Terriers won the Southern Conference Championship for the second time and earned the league’s automatic bid. Wofford will face Montana in the first round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs on Saturday, November 24 at 2:05 pm ET.
