Nationally-ranked Badgers shoot past Terriers

Box Score Box Score

MADISON, Wis. -- Wofford jumped out to an early lead only to have it quickly erased and never fully recovered in a 70-43 defeat to No. 23 Wisconsin Monday night in the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The contest marked the first time in school history the Terriers played in front of a nationally-televised audience, as the game was broadcast on ESPN2.

Sophomore Junior Salters gave Wofford (3-2) an early 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer and layup over the opening two-and-a-half minutes before Jason Bohannon answered with a trey of his own to put the Badgers on the board at 15:54. His triple began a 13-0 Wisconsin run covering the next four minutes.

Senior Drew Gibson, a preseason All-Southern Conference choice, stopped the surge temporarily with a bucket at 11:08. The Badgers continued to pour in points adding five more before Noah Dahlman's three-point play at 8:58 cut the deficit to eight, 18-10. A 7-0 Wisconsin (6-1) surge fed into a 20-10 run to close the first half. Gibson buried a long 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to make 38-20 at the break.

Sophomore Corey Godzinski knocked down a triple early in the second half before suffering his fifth foul before a minute-and-a-half passed in the period. It was his only points of the game.

Following a Badger technical foul, Salters converted one of the two foul shots, but Wisconsin stayed on the offensive end. Marcus Landry had a running tip-in to give the hosts a 46-24 advantage with 16:20 to play. Salters hit another 3 and Tim Johnson added a jumper and 1-of-2 free throws to slice the gap to 15, 46-31, with 12:44 remaining.

The Badgers then used another 13-0 streak to open a 28-point edge, 59-31, which was capped by a Brian Butch layup at 7:35. Salters' third 3-pointer of the contest ended the run before Gibson had an old-fashioned three-point play at 6:24 to pull the Terriers within 24, 61-37. It would be the closest Wofford would get the remainder of the game.

Salters and freshman Noah Dahlman, who was playing in front of nearly 15 friends and family and six hours from his hometown, added field goals in the final minute for the final margin.

Gibson led all players with 16 points, while Salters added 14. Dahlman tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds, including six defensively.

Bohannon paced the Badgers with 14 points, while Joe Krabbenhoft chipped in 12 and Landry posted 11. Landry was also the team leader with nine rebounds.

Wofford will return to action when it opens Southern Conference play at 7 p.m. Saturday against UNC Greensboro inside the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
