SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Wofford sophomore
Katie McChesney stonewalled the Samford offense as neither team could find the back of the net in a 0-0 double overtime tie in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
McChesney finished with nine saves on 11 Bulldog shots, including a point-blank stop on a Caroline Baxter shot from the left post with seven minutes in regulation. Baxter, along with teammates Amber Cress and Shannon Healy, each had two shots on goal as Samford (4-8-2, 3-1-2 SoCon) controlled much of the offensive possession.
The Bulldogs managed a 15-5 edge in corner kicks, building a 5-0 lead in the category through the first half.
The host Terriers, however, stood firm on the defensive end in front of their goalkeeper and kept Samford from scoring. Wofford (2-7-5, 1-3-2 SoCon) played in its seventh overtime affair of the season and sixth of which went into the second extra period. The seven overtime matches are a single-season program record.
Four shots, including one each from juniors
Monica Ploetzke and
Blair Green and freshmen
Maggie McLaughlin and
Sydney Reed, were all the Terriers could attempt at the Bulldog cage and goalie Alyssa Whitehead. Whitehead collected one save in the 110 minutes of action, coming on Green's header.
In the three meetings in the series between the two schools, two have resulted in 0-0 ties and both were played at Snyder Field.
Wofford will return to action when it hosts UNC Greensboro at 6 p.m. Friday.
