CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Freshman Maggie O'Brien netted her second goal of the season just before halftime to give Wofford a lead and the Terriers extended their advantage in the second 45 minutes to defeat The Citadel, 3-1, in Southern Conference women's soccer action Saturday at WLI Field in Charleston, S.C. The game was moved to Saturday after inclement weather postponed Friday's original date.
O'Brien put Wofford (3-9-5, 2-5-2 SoCon) ahead for good on an unassisted tally at 44:46.
Earlier in the half, fellow rookie
Sydney Reed gave the Terriers a 1-0 edge on her first collegiate tally off an assist from junior
Cassie Rex at 18:55. Nikkita Persaud knotted the scoring at 34:56 on a Nicole Martinolli assist.
Neither team would add another score until O'Brien fed junior
Blair Green at 84:27 for the final goal past goalkeeper Whitney Nave of The Citadel (3-12-1, 1-8 SoCon).
Freshman
Maggie McLaughlin matched Persaud for game-high honors with four shots each, while Green finished with three attempts off the bench. Amy Loughran added a trio for the Bulldogs, who recorded a slim 15-14 shot advantage in the contest.
Sophomore
Katie McChesney collected four saves, while Nave picked up six stops in the The Citadel's cage.
Wofford will continue its Low Country road trip with a 1 p.m. Sunday match at College of Charleston.
