Western Carolina Tops Terriers in Women's Basketball

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Brooke Johnson led three players in double-digit scoring as the Western Carolina Lady Catamounts picked up their first Southern Conference win over Wofford by a score of 91-66.

The Terriers started the first half with a two-point lead, but the Lady Catamounts quickly tied the score at four and, from there, went on a 22-6 scoring run to take a 16-point lead at the 11 minute mark. With Western Carolina leading by as many as 20 points, Wofford shot a blistering 4-6 from beyond the arc within a three-minute period to cut the Lady Catamounts’ lead in half, but it was not enough, as Western Carolina headed into the half with a comfortable 13-point lead.

Western’s Brooke Johnson led all players in the first half with 10 points, shooting 4-7 from the field and helping the team to a .548 percentage in the first half. Wofford’s Summer Nichols grabbed six rebounds in the first half.

The Lady Catamounts continued to build their lead in the second half, leading by as many as 27 points with five minutes remaining in the contest before taking the 91-66 victory.

Western was led by Johnson’s 19 total points, while Kristen Feemster added 13 and Lauren Powell contributed 12. Feemster notched a double-double with 11 rebounds, while Johnson narrowly missed a double-double performance with nine rebounds. The Lady Catamounts shot .493 from the field and .500 from three-point range.

Junior Maddie Helms led the Terriers with 10 points while shooting 3-6 from beyond the arc. Freshman April Moorhouse and senior Kate Dempsey each added nine points, and senior Summer Nichols led the team with seven rebounds.

With the victory, Western Carolina improves to 4-5 on the season and 1-1 in the Southern Conference while Wofford falls to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Terriers will hit the road as they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to face Bucknell on Friday, December 19. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
