Chattanooga Defeats Women's Basketball

Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Shanara Hollinquest and LaCondra Mason led three Lady Mocs in double digit scoring with 13 points apiece as Chattanooga held on to defeat the Wofford women’s basketball team 57-46 on Saturday.

Despite a solid defensive effort, the Terriers were unable to overcome a 15-point second-half deficit. Wofford forced 27 turnovers and grabbed 17 steals, taking advantage of the Chattanooga miscues to claim 20 points.

In the first half, the Terriers claimed their first and only lead of the contest with a two-point basket by Kathlyn Varno. The Lady Mocs quickly responded by going on an 18-3 scoring run, reaching their largest lead of the half at 18-5 with nine and a half minutes remaining. The Terriers fought back with a run of their own run, scoring eight unanswered points to cut Chattanooga’s lead to five. The two teams battled back and forth, with the Lady Mocs heading into halftime with a 26-19 lead.

The Terriers continued to hang on to start the second half, but allowed the Lady Mocs to take another 15-point lead, again around the nine-minute mark. Down by 13 points with 8:15 remaining, the Terriers went on a 10-2 scoring run to cut the Lady Mocs’ lead to a mere four points.

Despite a strong push at the end of the half, a string of four made free throws by the Lady Mocs clinched the 57-46 victory for Chattanooga.

Hollinquest and Mason led the Lady Mocs with 13 points each, while Erin Ogan added 12 points. Mason and Jenaya Wade-Fray each grabbed nine boards to lead Chattanooga.

Natalie Gramblin led the Terriers with 15 total points and Mahagony Williams added nine points. Kate Dempsey claimed 12 rebounds to lead the Terriers. Junior Kelly Dwyer racked up five steals and three assists in the loss.

With the loss, Wofford falls to 3-15 overall and 1-9 in the Southern Conference, while Chattanooga improves to 14-6 on the season and 9-1 in league play. Wofford continues its SoCon road swing with a trip to Birmingham, Ala. on Monday, January 26 to take on Samford. Game time is set for 6:30 ET.
