Women's Soccer ties Samford 0-0

SPARTANBURG, SC – Wofford women’s soccer tied Samford 0-0 Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Soccer Field in Birmingham, Alabama. For the third time in four meetings, the Samford soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against the Wofford Terriers. The scoreless tie was the third in the all-time series between the teams. This is Wofford’s sixth Southern Conference match and their first tie of the 2009 season. 

The Terriers are now 3-10-1 overall and 2-3-1 in Southern Conference play while the Bulldogs move to 8-1-3 overall and 3-1-2 in Southern Conference play. 

Wofford began the game with a shot by Cassie Rex at 5:55 that was saved by Samford’s goalie Alyssa Whitehead. The Bulldogs had one header shot by Hilary Samuels at 38:49 that went high. The Terriers had their one and only corner kick of the game in the first half at 26:44 by Jewel Kawamoto. The Bulldogs had 6 corner kicks in the first half. 

With the start of the second half, the Bulldogs came out with a shot at 46:41 by Amber Cress that went wide to the right of the goal. Wofford’s Daniella Fatti took a shot at 68:29 that was saved by Samford’s goalie Alyssa Whitehead. Samford took three shots within one minute of play in the second half at 85:01 by Amber Cress, at 85:07 by Lauren Cook, and at 85:24 by Cindy Spiker. Wofford’s goalie Katie McChesney saved all three shots. 

At the start of the first overtime period, Samford had only one shot by Hilary Samuels at 93:22 that went high. Wofford had no shots and two fouls.
 
During the second overtime period, Samford took 5 shots, had two corner kicks, and two fouls. Wofford’s goalie Katie McChesney saved one goal, and the team saved the fifth and final shot by Samford’s Paige Lanter at 109:21 to end the match. 

Samford outshot the Terriers 17 to 2. Samford lead corner kicks 11 to 1 and fouls 10 to 6. Wofford had 7 saves, 6 by goalie Katie McChesney which is a season high for her. Samford had 2 saves on the day. 

The Terriers are back in action at Alumni Soccer Stadium Friday, October 16 against Davidson in Davidson, North Carolina at 6:30 pm.
