SPARTANBURG, SC - Wofford Women’s Soccer fell 2-0 to College of Charleston Friday night at home at Snyder Field in their third Southern Conference match of the 2009 season. The Terrier’s move to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in SoCon while the Cougar’s advance to 7-3-1 overall and 3-0 in SoCon.
The Cougars had the first shot of the game at the ten minute mark and added another shot two minutes later. At 23:12, Katie Turner crossed the ball into the box and found Christian Patton on the left side. Patton’s shot went to the right of the goalie for a 1-0 lead. Wofford had a shot by Ellen Ezekiel at 29:36 that was high and one at 36:04 by Maggie McLaughlin that was saved.
To start the second half, College of Charleston had two quick shots in the first two minutes, including one by Julie Romanik that hit the left post. Wofford answered with shot by Sydney Reed that was just inches above the cross bar and a shot from Meredith Calcina that was also high. At the 60 minute mark, the Terriers had several chances on crosses, but did not connect.
At 81:39, the Cougars added a goal when Katie Kerr feed the ball to Sarah Schaidle in the box and from 15 yards out put the ball into the net to take a 2-0 lead. With four minutes remaining, Wofford had a shot by Monica Ploetzke that was saved. On a free kick with just 1:52 left in the game, Ploetzke’s shot went a foot high of the cross bar.
Wofford goalie Erika Christensen had two saves and two goals against, while College of Charleston goalie Sarah Wiggers had two saves in her third shutout of the season. The College of Charleston had a ten to six advantage on shots and a five to three edge on corner kicks.
The Terrier’s are back in action Sunday playing against The Citadel at Snyder Field at 2 pm.
