SPARTANBURG, SC – Wofford women’s soccer tied Appalachian State 1-1 Thursday evening at Snyder Field. Anne Phillips scored for the Terriers in the second half, but the Mountaineers tied it late in the second.
Wofford moves to 3-12-2 overall and 2-5-2 in SoCon play while Appalachian State shifts to 5-8-4 overall and 2-4-3 in SoCon action.
The Terriers had the first two shots of the game, both from Nikki Siebert that were saved by Carolina Clarke in the opening five minutes. Appalachian State recorded their first shot of the game at 13:16 when Taylor Dunlap had a shot that went high. At the end of the first half, Wofford had a five to three lead in shots.
To open the second half, Sydney Reed passed the ball to Anne Phillips. Phillips made several moves to evade defenders and was one-on-one against the goalie. Her shot went to the top right of the net for the goal at 48:33 and a 1-0 lead. At 55:18 Nikki Seibert had another shot saved by Clarke. Appalachian State had a shot by Hannah Coad saved with just under twenty minutes remaining in regulation.
The Mountaineers tied the game at 71:54 when Kaitlin Baker gained control of a ball crossed into the box by Paige Morrow and put it into the top center of the net for the tying goal. Appalachian State had several chances late, but were saved by Katie McChesney.
In the two overtime periods, the Mountaineers took the only two shots with one going high and the other by Katy Dodd saved with two minutes left in the game.
In the game Wofford had Jewel Kawamoto and Daniella Fatti leave the game due to injury.
Wofford goalie Katie McChesney made five saves and Appalachian State goalie Carolina Clarke also made five saves. The Mountaineers had an eleven to eight advantage on shots and each team had one corner kick.
The Terriers are back in action Sunday, October 25 for Senior Day playing against Western Carolina at Snyder Field at 2 pm.
