SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford women’s soccer team defeated The Citadel 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in a Southern Conference match-up. The Terriers scored a season-high four goals and recorded their second shutout of the season.
Wofford is now 2-10 overall and 1-3 in SoCon while the Bulldog’s move to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in SoCon.
Wofford began the game with the first two shots in the opening five minutes. Neither team had strong scoring chances until Daniella Fatti took a shot from 35 yards out that went into the left side of the net. Megan Wellborn had the assist on the goal at 30:42, which was Fatti’s first of her career. In the first half, Wofford had a four to three advantage on shots.
In the second half, the Terriers controlled the pace of play. At 55:16, Jewel Kawamoto placed a corner kick into the box that Megan Wellborn headed into the net for a 2-0 lead. It was Wellborn’s first career goal. Wofford continued to get good chances and limited The Citadel’s possession of the ball. Late in the game, Jewel Kawamoto served a corner kick into play that found Syndey Reed for a header that went to the right of the goalie for a 3-0 lead at 88:12. With 39 seconds left in the game, Monica Ploetzke scored from 20 yards out as her shot went to the right corner of the net. Nikki Siebert and Cassie Rex had assists on the goal that gave the Terriers the 4-0 victory.
In goal for Wofford, Erika Christensen had two saves in the first half. In the second half, Katie McChesney made one save in her first action since a knee injury in the season opener. For The Citadel, Whitney Nave made five saves and allowed four goals.
Wofford had a 13 to six lead on shots in the game. The Citadel had 11 fouls to 10 for Wofford, however two yellow cards were issued to the Bulldogs.
The Terrier’s are back in action Thursday, October 8 against Chattanooga at Snyder Field at 6 pm.
