SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College had three players named to the Coaches All-Southern Conference Team as announced by the league on Tuesday. Offensive lineman Pat Illig and punter Chris Tommie were named to the first team and offensive lineman Clark Bishop was named to the second team.
Pat Illig, a junior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, started all eleven games at left guard and led the team in knockdowns with 98 on the season. The offensive line allowed only nine sacks this year, the sixth-fewest in the nation.
A senior from Greenwood, S.C., Chris Tommie led the conference in punting with a 43.8 average. He also had four punts of over 50 yards and three that were inside the 20. His average is the best is school history for a single season, topping the 42.7 by Scooter White (1969) and Jimmy Miner (2002). Tommie missed the 2008 season due to injury.
Clark Bishop, a junior from Leesburg, Ga., started all eleven games at right tackle and had 61 knockdowns on the season. He was part of an offensive line that paved the way for an average of 270.18 rushing yards per game that was second in the nation.
In addition, freshman linebacker SeQuan Stanley earned a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman Team. Stanley started six games for the Terriers and was tied for third on the team with 55 tackles. He also had 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, plus two fumble recoveries. The Citadel led the conference with five selections on the squad.
Appalachian State led all schools with 15 players selected to the all-conference team, including nine first-team honorees. Elon had 11 players chosen, followed by Chattanooga and The Citadel with six each and Samford with five. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players in the voting process.
Other honors announced included Offensive Player of the Year Armanti Edwards (ASU), Defensive Player of the Year Josh Beard (UTC), Freshman of the Year Michael Johnson (WCU), Jerry Moore (ASU) and Russ Huesmann (UTC) Coach of the Year and Mario Acitelli (ASU) was the recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy.
The Southern Conference Sports Media Association All-Conference honors were announced on Wednesday and included Pat Illig on the first team and Chris Tommie on the second team.
