GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College men’s basketball team picked up a hard-fought road win over UNC Greensboro 69-57 on Monday night at Fleming Gym. The Terriers were led by Noah Dahlman with 18 points as the Terriers came back from being down at the half.
Wofford is 11-11 overall and 7-6 in the conference, while UNC Greensboro is 4-19 overall and 3-12 in the SoCon. The Terriers were led by Noah Dahlman with 18 points and five rebounds, while Junior Salters added 16 points. Tim Johnson had 13 rebounds and tied a career-high with six assists. The Spartans were led by Ben Stywall with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Kendall Toney added 15 points.
“I thought that UNCG made some tough shots in the first half,” said head coach Mike Young. “I thought we did a much better job in the second half of getting shots contested. I thought our effort and our team defense was exceptional. Anytime you win on the road it is a feather in your cap. Anytime you can come on the road and win and hold an opponent to 34% from the field, that is hard to do.”
The Terriers scored the first six points of the game and had an 8-2 lead at the 15:26 mark. UNC Greensboro then was able to put together a 14-3 run to take a 16-11 lead with eleven minutes left in the half as Ben Skywall scored six straight points for the Spartans. A three pointer by Kevin Giltner got the Terriers back to within one point at 16-15 and a three from Junior Salters cut the Spartans lead back to one point at 23-22 with 6:39 left in the half.
Wofford took the lead at 24-23 after a basket from Noah Dahlman at 6:07, however the Spartans scored the next six points to regain the advantage at 29-24 just two minutes later. At the half, the Spartans had a 31-29 lead.
To open the second half, Wofford tied the game with a shot by Tim Johnson. The score was then tied at 33, 35 and 37 before Kevin Giltner scored five straight points to give the Terriers a 42-37 lead at 13:20. The Spartans answered and pulled to within one, however Wofford used a lay-up from Noah Dahlman and a three from Corey Godzinski to take a 50-43 lead at the 10:23 mark.
Tim Johnson gave Wofford a nine point lead at 52-43, but the Kendal Toney hit a three to cut the lead back to six points with 8:50 left on the clock. The Terriers took a ten point lead after a basket from Brad Loesing at 56-46. With the lead at eleven, Junior Salters hit a three and was fouled at 3:36 for the four-point play and a 65-50 advantage.
The Spartans fought back in the final two minutes, going on a 7-0 run to make it a 65-57 lead with 1:44 on the clock. Jason Dawson then hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final 39 seconds to seal the 69-57 win.
Wofford shot 50.0% from the floor and 46.7% from three. The Terriers were 66.7% from the line. The Spartans shot 34.4% from the floor and 27.3% from behind the arc. UNC Greensboro was 81.8% from the free throw line. Wofford had a 36-35 edge on the glass and 17 assists on 27 made shots. It was the second straight-game Wofford has shot 50% or better from the field. The Terriers have won four straight over the Spartans.
The Terriers will host Davidson on February 12 at 7:00 pm. The game is sold-out.
