Box Score Game Box (pdf)

ELON, N.C. – In the Southern Conference opener for the Wofford College women’s soccer team on Friday evening, the Terriers were defeated 2-1 at Elon. Wofford scored first, but two goals just four minutes apart by the Phoenix gave Elon the win.

Wofford falls to 1-8-0 on the season and are 0-1 in Southern Conference play. Elon is 5-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Terriers goal was scored by Maggie McLaughlin,

After a slow first half that featured only three total shots, Elon put early pressure on the visitors to open the final period. Caroline McKinley fed Molly Calpin who fired a quick shot right into the hands of Terrier keeper Erika Christensen.

Despite these scoring chances by the Phoenix, Wofford got on the board first. Anne Phillips rocketed a shot from the right side at Elon goalie Sydney Little. Little blocked the shot but was unable to cover the ball, leaving it free for Maggie McLaughlin to put Wofford on top with the rebound goal at the 65:11 mark.

Elon continued to attack and bounced back to tie the score in the 73rd minute. Liz Palmer notched her third assist of the season after her corner kick found the head of McKinley for the equalizer.

The Phoenix took little time getting the go-ahead goal. At 76:21, Ceci Jensen came down the middle of the field and sent a ball to the right side. Calpin took the pass and converted a shot from about 15 yards out to put Elon on top.

The Phoenix defense held Wofford in check for the remainder of the half. The Terriers did not tally another shot as Elon held on for the victory.

For the Terriers, goalie Erika Christensen had two saves and two goals against. Elon goalie Sydney Little made two saves with one goal against. Wofford had 11 fouls to nine for Elon and each team had five corner kicks.

The Terriers will continue conference play on Sunday when they face UNC Greensboro at 2:00 pm at Greensboro. The next home match for Wofford is October 2 against the College of Charleston.
